Not a collector of these things but many beta discs have only writings on them, aren't those very easy to fake?
Slightly off topic. Was there ever a FFX build with original Japanese speech but English subs? The official EU release voice over was unbearably awful.
Not officially that I know of - the Japanese "FFX International" version gave you the option of English or Japanese text, but had English voices. There was a fan-made undub version of it that had the updated content out of FFX International, but with the Japanese voices reinstated, but that was never an official release.
For at least PlayStation master discs, they were just recordable discs. They are easy to make copies of, which is why this happened. BTW, are printed labels unusual? It seems easier to scribble notes on the disc with a marker instead.
It depends on the company and the reason. Ive had printed labels before, but more often than not it is just writing since they arent meant for permanent use. This is where a certain amount of trust comes in when buying prototypes. Most platforms are incredibly easy to fake (although a keen eye will notice certain things), if you don't know where something is coming from it is incredibly hard to verify. Ive passed on multiple items over the years just because I wasn't sure where they were coming from ,or I didn't like who they were coming from.
Last Saturday I tied the knot and got some results. Sorry for not getting to it earlier. The Ebay seller seems be caught in a bigger web, and he's in the process of making up for the sales. I've taken some screenshots, and I've left out the not so important talk. Sadly a guy named Dogan is on the loose... There's some cringy grammar on my part, but anyway, here it is: https://imgur.com/a/rc6hS
I think you should expose the scammer once it's all been verified; it sucks very much and we don't need more fake protos around. We have enough repros already.
The scammer is Dogan Conners. The Ebay seller sold these discs on Ebay and probably believed they were real. After this discussion took place he closed all remaining prototype disc listings.
The Ebay seller was knowingly selling pirated discs though. "Picked them up at a local flea market" Yeah right. There were 6 known pirated discs sold right there. He knew they were pirated. I just dont see the prototypes being any different. https://www.ebay.com/itm/Rule-of-ro...413229?hash=item440eb3622d:g:zGUAAOSwduNZ0H43
The plot thickens. That's not cool at all. I don't see any problem with exposing this person but with eBay I thought it was always "buyer beware."
With some poor grammar he actually states these discs "is burn keep in mind before you buy". So this one is more in the grey imo. Those discs were also sold before he found Dogan to have ripped him off. It's unacceptable, yes, but try put yourself in his shoes. He probably believed this Dogan guy, and what you're told is all you know. If he makes up for his mistakes I personally see no need to blame him further. I think it's pretty obvious that Dogan was spinning the web here, as he vanished. And you're free to say you told me so, if it turns out to be a get-away route for the Ebay seller, even though you haven't told me so yet.
So just so we're clear, we're thinking that he was given these copies of these discs, no? So he thought that he received a disc that he thought was potentially worth hundreds if not thousands for free? It's just fishy, and Im cautioning you not to believe a word of someone who was caught in the act wholeheartedly.
I don't think I ever mentioned the Ebay seller getting these discs for free. How much the Ebay seller got the discs for I don't know. And it's not really important, as long as he set things straight. And in the agreement is also a promise of not selling any more beta discs before getting them checked. The main focus here must be for this person to make up for the mistakes that were made and to not continue dealing in fake discs in the future.
A warning from a mod really should be enough. Going into details on why is not a good thing. Sellers of these items often change the way they do business on the feedback given.
Hope I'm Not destroying someone's evening by reviving this thread a little.... But how about this? It's on its way, so I haven't tested it yet in person.
It certainly looks like the Shadow of the Colossus preview disc I bought in 2009, but mine had the date 8/17/05 printed on. Please put the disc in a computer and make a list of its files with the sizes and dates, thanks. 7/12/2005 is the date of the standalone demo disc for the game...
