Despite the name, the PSX's parallel port is not what is commonly known as "parallel port".
It is named parallel because it uses "parallel" I/O - unlike the PC parallel port which is for communications, the PSX parallel port goes on the bus directly.

Expansion parallel ports rarely work very well. They tend to only really work with printers, much like the USB -> Parallel adapters do.

I only have a laptop, even if I could get a USB parallel port that could do bidirectional then the latency for bit banging would be horrible.

Yes, it is a particularly stupid name.

I never worked out why they renamed it that - if you look at a Japanese Playstation, that socket is marked gaibu kakuchou (外部拡張) - literally "external expansion". This always seemed to be a better description of what it was than the "parallel IO" that was put on the units marked in English.

"If anyone making usb hardware that allows this, I'd be willing to help out on the software side."i can make all : hardware and software. BUT i need the reason or support from You. under support i mean you pay for example for parts, for manufacturing pcb and etc. we can choose cheapest way to do it, so it can cost not so much. for example: 10pcs 5x5cm pcb costs - 9.99$ + shipping ~ 8..25$ (http://imall.iteadstudio.com/open-pcb/pcb-prototyping/im120418001.html) parts: for example ready to use dlp module based on ft245(up to 1mbyte/s) or ft2232(up to 3.8mbyte/s) and low cost fpga maxv ~1..2$ , + few caps, resistors. i can order pcb and parts and send half pcb or more to you. and i need couple for me. may part of work - hardware. creating scheme, route pcb and order it, then i debug it. test and etc - you get ready to work hardware.i can make software too, cause i should make it anyway - cause i need test hardware ))) but if you wish you can make it yourself, or i can help you. as y wish. this is what i can offer.btw - doesnt matter how port is called - cause it doesn't change the matter how i works

Strange thing is I thought it was garbage because at first it wouldn't work well, then I realised it was because there was some bug with the linux software so I had to change the model of the willem to the old v2 one and it worked fine.
I've also got a USB -> LPT cable which I tried on a printer and it only printed black blocks haha, got a refund for that though.
The thing is though is you get 'true' parallel port converters that you can use as ports such as what I've got and there are pcmcia or mini pc express cards you also get, but there's also just LPT printing port converters to that don't emulator a parallel port at all and just (attempt to) let you print off them.

When I was still an admin of sbhacker, we didnt find any PCI parallel cards that worked with bit banging JTAG for modems. YMMV

I think this is a really good idea - but the noise level in this thread is such that trying to discuss it here would be nearly futile. I've created another thread in the Sony development section with a few ideas on it - and comment and criticism is welcomed.

ok so I just read 14 pages of people bickering back and forth at each other, and really really really bad english that gave me a headache, So I have to ask a few things that were not made very clear,

    1. Is PSIO actually coming out or is someone else working on a project with similar results?
    2. If there is such a problem with them releasing the code under GPL, why not sell the hardware blank and let others design software for it.
    3. is no one thinking about using this to make a totally awesome portable ps1... because that's the first thing that came to mind.

1- Who the fuck knows really. This entire thing is a farce.
    2. Because then people are buying a product that has no actual use until somebody creates the software for it, which will probably be under the GPL because they won't be greedy cocksuckers that don't understand licenses.

yeah but thats the point i am getting at, it'd be like most dev boards they are blank, people who buy it unless they are retarded would know its blank

So Haunted wants quite a lot of money to send me a prototype for testing.

Considering he was the one who approached me to have one for testing to confirm its real - this is quite crazy. So I wont be having one and wont be posting any information about it.

device is not finished - but dozens games work well. video with good speed even w/o fast sd speed.
as it's hobby project so main problem is free time. so i have no time to make menu or OS w/ good GUI intarface, from this point menu can be made by some one else. if good programmers is still alive and wish to program.

for BadAD we make new revision 1.1 (yellow pcb), after i finished little menu (so the pc no need for work) we plan send you. i was agree to send couple of prototypes to some one who wants, cause we got few pcb from manufacturer. i also sent couple raw pcb to guy from Ukraine, cause he agree to buy all parts and solder himself.

Someone might have transferred the project from that dumb idiot to themselves. Thanks, whoever transferred it away from that dumbo that did nothing and pooped it out and then puked all over the links for the open source software to control the PSIO device. Hopefully he will make some new software to control it so that dumbo can learn his lesson.

Anyone truly committed to make this work would send at least one or two boards out for free, at the very least with some kind of legal agreement that they'd be returned after a certain amount of time.

Asking for a shitload of money upfront just looks like another scam.

You aren't doing yourself any favours here.

I strongly recommend this thread gets shut down and all mentions of PSIO are halted until someone credible on these boards (an admin) can verify it as a legit device.

I just feel like someone is gonna get taken for a ride here.
