Class action lawsuits don't do fuck all. Initial filers get a shit tonne of money and the supporters get ridiculous tiny amounts. I think some people make a living off waiting for products to have controversy and then become the initial filees. Think about it. Step 1. Find a product with controversy Step 2. Buy said product Step 3. file a class action Step 4. Make it big on the internet Step 5. watch as people support you Step 6..... Step 7. PROFIT!!!!
How do you figure they don't care? I highly doubt it. The thing I don't understand is how they got passwords. Surely they would be stored using one way encryption?
From what I read on various parts of the interwebs, the recent redbug patch for the cfw is what did the trick. Basically it turns your PS3 into a dev system, or emulates it, and when you sign into ps3 your essentially signing into the developer section of the network. Someone figured out from there that you can then download free psn games to your hearts content using phoney credit card numbers, since its a protected dev system on the network and they don't check the numbers. So once in that system, it was simply a matter of writing some nifty code to grab all the user information including passwords which was probably accessible from there. The big question is, was Sony's security so shoddy that it was inevitable, or because of GeoHotz were they specifically targeted? Everyone knows that the community hated the Holtz lawsuit but sony isn't the only player in town. The reason I ask is why hasn't this happened to Microsoft? Their xbox live is huge in size and popularity, bigger than PSN I'd say. Their consoles break constantly (unless you bought one within the last year) and in general they're just huge targets for bored 13 year olds who have nothing to do but learn code and play Halo.
http://us.playstation.com/news/consumeralerts/#non-us http://psx-scene.com/forums/f6/psn-update-private-information-compromised-85598/ ^It wasn't the Rebug CFW their server were hacked for 3 days before they could shut it down and all private information was dumped by a hacker, this is worse then people thought
Theres no explanation how it was done in those links, just some forum admin saying it wasn't rebug. Whoever hacked it did it 3 days before sony shut down the servers. That still fits the rebug release timeline. Not saying for sure that caused it but I don't see any evidence that closes it out either.
while I am not overly worried yet on my personal details. I am now never using credit cards on online services again. Pre Paid cards & visa gift carts from here on out. =|
Hmm I dunno, but do you think there will be much space for success? Their TOS is pretty slick and I foresee some crap in the end like with the otheros removal. Yeah, someone won at least 100$, other cases were dismissed. That's a joke if you think how they rendered a entire application for the hardware unusable. To be honest I still hate them for that as I used my Ps3 a lot for certain math calculations with linux. Now they have a major problem with lost details and late informing, but they will get away with it, even with this senator at their ass. Major Corps always get away with being bulldozers to their customers, even Sony. I like their hardware, but their politics/actions are crap an currently tend to top the worst action they did before. Proven once again in this case. Now let's hope no one ordered 50 new Ps3 to Kasachstan with our CCs already.
For those wondering, you can still use Netflix. You just have to click "sign-in" when the PSN prompt comes up, and when it fails, press O and Netflix will start to load. I think you have to do this twice. A bit annoying, but at least it works.
I've just phoned me bank and cancelled the Debit Card that's registered to my PSN account. It would appear that all personal information could have been compromised. If there's the slightest chance someone has my name, address, password, and my full card details including the security code, I'm not taking any chances.
Who cares really, I mean if your CC details are abused/stolen you are fully insured for this by the credit card company's. One call saying: that wasn't me and they compensate you and investigate. It happened to me once, and it was totally hustle free! so I have no worry what so ever something like this happening to me again.
It's official, Sony is saying your password, credit card info (still kept on the server even if you opted out in storing the billing info), billing address, purchase history, etc. has been breached. http://cyberinsecure.com/sony-playstation-network-breached-77-million-users-private-data-stolen/
Oh I know that, I just don't wish to deal with it nor the hassle of my wife breathing down my neck if something like that happens (she gets paranoid). I live downtown and PSN point cards are sold everywhere so getting them is not a hassle nor is there any additional charges for one (no tax, tax is done at time of purchase on psn). No credit card means I won't also need to keep my address on file either.
Having your credit card information stolen isn't really a big deal for the cardholder. They'll remove any unauthorized charges. It is a big hassle for the companies where the stolen credit cards are used. If they accept payment and ship they're never going to see their money or their product again.
Any mention yet of compensation for the downtime and loss of service etc as a good will gesture on Sony's part?
