Limited edition systems are a big deal in the collecting world, but what is the rarest that was ever sold? I'm refering to the consoles that were availible for purchase, not the ones that were given away in contests. I'm leaning towards the Gates signed xboxes at 56 units (the launch team ones, not the partners ones only because the partners version was given away for free). That's the smallest run i can think of, but there are probably better candidates out there. I'm guessing the title would probably go to one of the LE dreamcasts, but i don't know which ones were sold and which were contest prizes.
Well, I knew a guy who owned the only Neptune prototype there is, which I guess, would be the rarest, since there was only one copy (it was a mock-up btw). But he disappeared in 2000 and I had no luck in finding him.
I'm more looking for consoles that were actually sold. There are plenty of "one-of-a-kind" consoles out there, but i don't think most of them were sold to the public.
Wouldn't the M2s be considered the most rares? A complete one, that is colored black, which I've seen some members here own and they appear to have what a retail unit would come with if they did actually come out, would cost $2,000, right? Also, I dont think there aren't many out there, just a handful.
I don't know how rare those really are though. If I remember correctly I thought there were several hundred found and floating around. Or was that the kiosk unit?
Numbers for the rarest non-contest LE Dreamcasts: - Custom DC (79 pieces) - Biohazard S.T.A.R.S. DC (201 pieces) - Maziroa Dreamcast DC (500 pieces) Although the Custom DC was given away in some kind on competition it was a regular sale on D-Direct for approx. 15000 Yen. There are some signed copies of the Maziora Dreamcast which should make this to the rarest LE Dreamcast - i think that there were much less than 50 units signed.
I'm not talking about the kiosk units, those are worth $20. I was lucky enough to sell mine for $50 few months before they were dumped on ebay. i'm talkinga bout the black one that looks like the white CDROM debug unit, it looks like the retail unit would have had it come out like it should.
i think he wants consoles that where actually officially sold in stores, not comercial units of unreleashed consoles, but i could be wrong.
I would say for unreleased snes cd and the "dreamcast" upgrade for saturn. Released I would say quantity is no indication of price. There aren't many gizmodos but they aren't worth shit. For rarity and value, I would say prize editions, like the 10,000,000 psx and whatnot. There are limited dc units, but I dont expect those to hold value. I'd say it would be smart to get a divers dc, an orta xbox, a gameq.
i was watching g4 history of ps1 and they said a good number of snes cd combos by sony were manufactured but production was quickly haulted after nintnedo made their deal with philips, but i imagine they were detroyed quickly knowing how fast japanese companies react.
Funny, I read a article (probably EGM but it could have been online) where the writer was at Sony and saw a stack of them piled in a closet or back room.
I would say if you're talking retail: None. Anything retail is made in decent quantity. I guess if I had to pick something it would be the Japanese ntsc multi-mega or the aiwa mega cd boom box, saturn navi with screen
a friend of mine had one of these signed xboxes. he installed a modchip and a new harddisk in it here is a nice picture of it (the tv screen shows evoX)
