Remember that new Neo Geo Handheld from earlier this year.....

Heck, Id be happy is that a genuine Neo Geo Stick that could be connected via usb to a pc or ps3. Would go a long way to make this worth the asking price.

You're right, all the hardware in the NeoGeo would be cheap now, if there was a market for it. But there isn't. And with no market, no mass production, no cheap prices. Also since production stopped you would have quite a startup cost I imagine. But yes technologically speaking the NeoGeo would not be very expensive now. Atleast not as expensive as it was back then. NeoGeo game carts could probably be made cheaper as well. This new device probably isn't manufactured by SNK. Who knows what input they had on it, nevermind the fact that SNK isn't SNK from the old days anyway. This really is just a licensed emulator.

For my personally the portable aspect has no appeal. Portable gaming is for certain groups of people. Traditionally kids being the biggest group. Then you do have those people that try to play games on the go or when they are out somewhere I guess. But I don't play games while I'm out somewhere so I don't need a portable system. Most people just use their phone for that stuff anyway since they are already carrying that.

So if I want to play NeoGeo, I power up my NeoGeo MVS. No emulation needed.

Unless you are saying the portable is emulation, then you put it on the dock and its real hardware? that makes no sense. Cheap or not, thats just not going to happen as its additional cost for no reason.

You'd probably have to actually see how the system is, build quality wise as well. For all we know it could be made out of the exact same plastic as the Dingoo, I'd just be interested in that joystick and it's build quality.

 

As I said before there could be a market (nice one too) for this console if SNK were to make new old-school-style NeoGeo games for it

With ARM these days anyone can make a console, just look at the ouya n00bs, but $200 is too much considering there are generic chinese tablets with better specs going for almost half that

I was wondering what the size of the dock station.

I don't think it would be a complete replica of the AES that is quiet big.

 

The ports on the front appear to be USB ports, you could probably figure out what size it is by using that as a reference.

 

Do you think they will repackage the guts of this system into a clone console with a cart slot ? like the Blaze Megadrive/Genesis since Blaze is involved ?

 

If you mean so it could play AES carts then I don't think so. The actual neogeo hardware is not really the expensive part its the games which are the problem. Even if Blaze or whoever decided to release a 'budget' home console version of the AES if it still took the original carts it would be pointless. If you want a home console neogeo that plays on the TV but uses roms thats exactly what you will be getting with the NeoGeo X and dock, plus the bonus of being a portable version too.

How is this a win? You get a base amount of 20 games that are not the highlights of the system (no Metal Slug X for instance), no way to add new games etc. Now if this was one of those cheap Sega emulator handhelds you can get from Amazon for 30 bucks I'd say great, but for $200? Theres not even an SD card slot which the sega ones have! And TV out is not worth a hundred or more dollars. Its robbery using the name Neo Geo. The only people who this appeals to is the hardcore Neo Geo fan who must have everything labled Neo Geo and like the high executive price.

Buy a used AES console or better yet save up for a consolized MVS system if you have to have the true experience.

Edit: I didn't see that it has an expandable card slot. If this allows for the usual roms, using the original neo geo stick, thats a bit better. But still steep at $200. So a kinda win

I think the thing is a winner because it is a home system and portable too which for me is pretty important as I spend a large amount of time travelling on a train to work each week.

I disagree that for the $200 you should buy an AES or even a consolized MVS because both are much more expensive, at least in the UK they would be.

I recently sold my AES with the following:

AES US MACHINE 1 KIDNEY CONTROLLER & 1 NGCD PAD
FATAL FURY SPECIAL CART ONLY
SUPER SIDEKICKS 2 CART ONLY
PRO BOWLING CART ONLY

The buyer paid pretty much £180 for the machine and £20.00 postage to get it. I think the NEOGEO X represents miles better value for money even with 'only' 20 mostly average games. Picking up a pre-made consolized MVS will cost you over £200 and then the cheapest 161 cart or whatever will cost over £100. Also if you wanted to buy any of the pre-loaded 20 games as an AES cart it would cost decent amounts of money. (i sold my copy of NAM 1975 for £30 for example)

I believe the NGX machine will be expandable with more games via the SD slot but obviously don't know 100% or even how extra games could be added but still its making the right noises to me. I don't think people will buy one on the back of being an SNK super collector either as most 'hardcore' SNK fans seem to hate the idea of the machine in the first place. Its not official SNK hardware because its not made by SNK etc.

It looks like a product aimed at game fans of a certain vintage who remember but never got to experience the original machine because it was sooooo expensive and those people still cannot enjoy it now because its still sooooo expensive.

Yes emulators are available on nearly every machine so I guess the people who dig emulators wouldn't bother but I like shiny material possessions so I will be getting it.

The plastic looks kinda shitty for the docking station at least - but it seems that you dont have to buy the docking station if you don't want to.

The handheld on its own is MSRP $130 and you still get the 20 games. It is $70 on top for the dock and the stick then.
