    Hi Guys,

So I'm new here and have just purchased an Xbox 360 Crystal, however one of the thumb sticks on the controller needs replacing (the rubber has come off it). I'm having trouble finding the replacement stick online and was wondering if anyone knows where I can but one or if the Xbox 360 thumbsticks can be used instead?

    Thanks in advance :)

I'm confused, what controller do you want to fix? XBOX or XBOX 360 controller?

Anyway, they are interchangeable. Only difference is, XBOX 360 thumbstick caps are thicker than the XBOX thumbstick caps. There's shit loads on eBay for nothing more than $1.

Ah, no worries man. Yep depending if you're talking about Controller S, if so yes. They still fit in the Duke controllers just won't look the same.

Yep that's the console and controller than I have, the crystal controller has a damaged thumbstick and needs replacing as i said. Hopefully if I replace both the thumbsticks then it will look fine and not out of place :)

It will look fine then, you said 360 crystal so confused.

Anyhow, make sure you get black ones and it will look good as new.

Ahhhh so I did! Sorry I didn't realise :p. And that's good then because I want it to look as good as possible :D. Picked the console up today for decent price with two controllers but it does need a little work doing on it and needs cleaning up. There's a little bit of rust under the bottom of the console which is worrying but hopefully it will work fine! The second controllers wire has frayed a little too near the base of the controller but I won't be using that one anyway as it's the crystal controller I will be using and that just needs the sticks replacing :)

    Good luck with the repairs.

For the rust, just sand it away and apply any oil other than cooking oil to the shielding. It's usually prone to rusting, so a good sand and some oil will prevent it from ever happening, just be careful not to buckle the shielding from the top part of the case as it's easily bent. Good luck :)

Okay thanks for that! :D I thought something had been spilled on it so I was kind of worried about it! Not tried it out yet but hoping it won't have any other major issues :). Will have a read over the forums anyway and have a look what other people have done with theirs as I'm hoping this will become a little project for me :D

I assume it's okay for me to take it apart to clean the insides and the fan and that?

XBOX is rather easy to fix or repair since it's modular. Only unrepairable problem would the 3 time boot up and christmas lights. Let's hope you don't have that issue.

It will be easy to take apart, to clean inside. The fan is clipped through the shielding, so best thing to do is get some compressed air and blow the dust out.

Oh god, that doesn't sound good :-/ ha. I'm sure it will work just fine anyway :) the console itself seems like it's in good condition too other than the rust and dust :p. Will have a test of it later today to see if it all works as it's supposed too :)

Got round to testing it anyway, the disc drive sticks a little while opening and needs to be nudged for it to open. The controller being frayed near the base is annoying but it works fine :). Don't suppose anything can be done about either issues can it?

Get some cheapo third-party controller, or maybe a broken original one, and salvage the cable from there?

About the drive: Maybe add some grease in the right places, and/or replace that small rubber belt driving the tray. Personally I wouldn't bother though. Just softmod or chip the box and play from the harddrive - that's much more convenient than juggling optical media anyways.

I have repaired recently a few xbox controllers with faulty leads. Either did a cut and shut (drilled out the cable grommet to re-use) or used tge cable from a controller extension cable.

Disc tray is the band and the draw. Open up the enclosure, and remove the band. Leave it in warm soapy water for about 10 minutes, air dry it and place it back. I believe you've got a Samsung Drive, I have a disassembly video on my YouTube channel. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=flaYBmuut7E. Location of the band is the same between Ver. B and Ver. A.
To realign the tray, follow my youtube video and just slide the tray back in. The white gear must be aligned with the tray groove, otherwise you'll hear the white gear assembly hit the draw and not eject. Also remember to grease the side of the tray where it makes contact with the guides.

    Good luck! :)

Hi guys, thanks for all your replies!! In currently looking at getting a refund for the Xbox and looking to get a better one off eBay. If I fail at that, I'll be following your advice and using your guides to fix my current one

Depends how much you paid for the system, I'd keep it and just swap out the DVD-ROM drive or so.

Seeing you got a Crystal Pack system, it'd be worth no more than AU$50.
