Not sure as I've not used the USB method myself. If you don't want to fork out the £8-9 you could always do the "hotswap" method. Personally I did it once and found it a bit long winded so I invested in the memory card etc.

I think this is the tutorial I used - http://daleswanson.org/stuff/xbox.htm

You could wait for Hex1gon to come online as he's more up to speed with the hotswap method...

Thank you for the helpful post! I managed to get the seller to include a free memory stick though so have ordered that cable off eBay! :D. Should be able to begin modding next week! :D. Can't wait! :D

Any USB will work, since the XBOX will format it straight away when you plug it in.

If the SID file is not on the USB stick/memory card, the XBOX will reboot the game with error light flashing. (Error 21)
Make sure you match your exploit to the region of your game!

Official Link to the exploit files and manual:
    http://www.filefactory.com/file/b3b0f54/n/Softmod.Installer.Deluxe.v5.11.Final.Xbox-Hq.rar

I'll most likely make an up-to-date video about softmodding, since I've gotten quite a few questions lately. I understand it's confusing for beginners, I was the same hah.

Brilliant! Thanks for the additional help :). And that would be great too! It's just a lot of the videos are outdated and explain the long way of doing things which might not necessarily be the best/fastest way of doing things all these years later.

It all seems fairly easy anyway from what I've read so far..just seems that I need to pop the required files and saves onto a USB drive, plug it into my Xbox using the adapter I bought, boot up splinter cell and load the save game which will boot me into the installer. Backup my existing files on my HD then install the new dashboard..that about rite?

That's correct apart from part. The USB will be formatted to FATX, so Windows will not be able to read the USB. So you'll need to follow the USB preparation guide: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/578329
Don't worry though, it won't be difficult to setup, since you're pretty spot on with Windows.

Your USB is ready, connect it to the XBOX while sitting at the dashboard. Go into Memory > Memory Card X (X depending which port you've connected the USB to). SID and Splinter Cell should be seen in the menu.
Insert Splinter Cell, and boot up the exploit, the XBOX will then launch the XBE and you'll be in SID.

The backup process is simple and quick. Backup your EEPROM, and your C Drive (this is required, SID will not continue without it).

Select softmod install, Single Boot or Dual Boot it's up to you (Dual boot was just for XBOX Live, however can still save you if your dash has a bad config in the future). Select UnleashX (Evo X is bullshit, can be installed later as an Application if you want to use trainers in the future).
Let the installer complete all steps, SID will prompt you to shutdown the XBOX. Select Shutdown, and turn on the system. Depending if you've selected Dual Boot, power on the system with the power button not the eject button. Otherwise the XBOX will boot to the MSDASH. UnleashX, should start up by pressing the power button dual boot/single boot.
When UnleashX starts up successfully, turn off your XBOX and take it to the PC or near your network (router or hub). Go to your E drive and copy your EEPROM.bin to your PC and maybe on another USB stick or Hard Disk for safe keeping.

If whenever in the future you'd like to install a larger Hard Disk, you can now easily create one using your EEPROM.bin inside a XBOXHDM disc image and lock your new Hard Disk. Then simply install the new Hard Disk into your XBOX :)

Hope all this helps, you shouldn't have any troubles.

Wow! Thank you so much for that! I wouldn't have known about the USB drive preparation otherwise. Can't tell atm because I've not begun the softmodding but from what you've said, it seems fairly straight forward and your explanation seems like it will be helpful once I actually get going with it! :D. Should start sometime next week once I've got some free time so will let you all know how it goes! Thanks for mentioning about how to add a new hard drive too, that was to be one of my future questions as I am looking at putting a larger HD in eventually :)

No worries man. Hopefully you breeze through quickly and you'll be softmodded in no time.

Depends how it all goes next week, I may just make a video about the softmod process soon. Wanting to make a video recently :)

As always, ever get stuck I'll be able to help you.

    Hi Guys,

Is there a way to find out what type of burnt DVDs will work in my Xbox? I've heard only certain ones work in certain consoles..

No problem, if you ever download a title that's not in ISO form. Grab QUIX and create the ISO through it and burn with IMGBURN. :)

Okay I'll bear that in mind! Thanks again! :D. Going to attempt to take apart and clean up the Xbox today before my USB adapter comes so that it's all ready to be softmodded :)

Just thought I'd post and let people know that I managed to take it all apart, cleaned it all up good and proper and got a can of compressed air too to clean out all the dust, got some sandpaper for the rust and sanded the sides and even took it apart so far that I was able to sand the metal plate at the bottom too :). It looks brand new now and I'm loving it! Ha. Just waiting for my USB adapter to come now and then I can begin the softmodding :D

Is it safe to remove the metal plate from the top shell of the console? I just think it would look cooler being able to see the hard drives and that! :)

Is it the USB version of the SID installer I need btw or just the normal one?

It's safe to remove it sure, but you may get a lot of noise on your TV. Even though the shielding below is still there, the top of the case seems to actually ground the system. Try it and if you don't get any noise you can leave it off.

You'd need the USB SID Installer, not sure if the memory card version will work. You can place both on there anyway wouldn't matter. :)

Okay thanks, i think I'll leave it for now then because my xbox sits rite next to my TV and I don't want it to interfer with it. Also it seems like it was stuck to the case pretty good so don't want to damage it taking it off. And thanks! My USB cable might be here today so ill be able to give it a go if so :)

It's stuck to the case by the shielding being bent to the screw area. You bend those out with a flathead screw driver. Getting them back on is a bit difficult, I usually just tape them back or glue them. My custom XBOX had no shielding at all, I started getting white lines all around the screen. Worse with the aftermarket component cables, so I had to go back to the standard AV pack. I installed the top tin shielding back and they were gone. So that lead me to believe the top part of the shielding grounds the noise out.

So I'd leave the shielding on there, and if you're good with cutting you could cut a window out so you can see the Hard Disk and DVD-ROM. However won't be great to look at since it will be two boxes inside :p If you can saw a DVD-ROM window cover I'd suggest one of those.

Okay that's settled, I'm leaving it on then! Don't want to remove it and then find issues with it interfering with my TV and then not be able to get it back on again! Ha. Oooooo that would be cool!! I didn't manage to fix the DVD drive..it hardly every sticks now but I couldn't get to the rubber band thing inside it once I'd opened it so had too just leave it as it was
