Are you using the original Xbox pad or the S Controller pad? I think the original d-pad is shit, but the S Controller got it just right (my opinion, anyway).

In my opinion, there's something very fishy about the box, but the controller looks quite real. Why he would have one and decide to fake the other is beyond me, though.

    ..........

The control pad looks like it could be real, check out the Sony development ISA cards on Assemblers main site. He has pics of the two ISA PSX developments board with a sony pad that has a similar connection, so that could explain the pad away as a proto pad. As for the CD unit.....

Why the hell not, Im not into development hardware like some you guys, but its totaly possible its a proto SNES CD unit, I mean come on, most of us are dismissing it becasue it looks nothing like the "mock ups" and the supposed final design for the SNES CD which got released for magazines, but come on hands up.....who has actually seen this "mock up" in real life as being a final or even first second third design for the unit.

Sure, I'll be the first to admit the unit looks like shit, but then again, some development hardware is nothing but uncased PCB boards so theres still a chance its not.....

And even if its not a SNES CD, say some back up unit or heavens forbid an elaberate internet hoax, its still warranted 4 pages to a topic baords....

Anyway, more information would be nice, but it looks like its gonna be a sit back and wait situation.

Have paitence and live in peace my fellow geeks.....its time will come! :smt043

Oh, they're both shite. I was using the Controller S, but the Duke's is the same.

Maybe it's a fake, maybe it's not, but so far the guy hasn't actually proved anything by the pics he has shown.

1- i know all the story already, i didn't whanted to heard it once again , did you read carefully what i've wrote?
    it goes like this:
the thing is, the guy on the site told it wasn't for that system ''heck, its not even for the super nintendo!'' he clearly says the controller is a for/from a playstation dev. unit, he clearly say it.

and the controller isn't fake , that's for sure.
the controller have the same color as THE project the sony snes cd addon finished, the psx. so, the controller was made way after ninty canned the idea of the super nintendo cd addon, because the final style is shown. so, if the controller can't be pluged to the machine nor the super ninty then what relly the the system to sony, apart that the thing is for the snes and that it use cd? cd was a new technology , but don't say me only sony was able to do a cd drive! it could have been made by alot of other compagny , and maybe it wasn't even a official nintendo project!

i repeat it , the psx dev controller isn't fake, but why do link it to this thing anway?

hope you could answer my question now, hope it sound better.

there's specs for the sony snes cd addon , as well for the philips one. and nothing is a ''waste of time'' why would it be a waste of time anyway? do you already know what's in it? the lockout chip is in the snes already, but that system need to be accepted by the snes, apart if there's specials snes without any lock out chips. but then, he would need this special snes to make the thing work and be able to paly is software that he ''own'' . nothing is a wast of time.

i don't whant to rop the software he own, heck we couldn't even play it , how many sony prototype snes cd add-on emulator on the web anyway? uh.... im still wating for one!

    ---------------------------------------------------------------
this is just too suspect, you see:
    - he find a snes thing with a cd tray.

-he find (at the same time!) a playstation dev controller that have no conections with the snes thing

-and he find (hey , he's terribly lucky!) a snes cd add-on software that can be read with is box .
    ---------------------------------------------
    too bad for him:
    -is software is very distinctive.
(perhaps a game made by nintendo ? more unbleviable than ever) , he can't reveal any proof of it.

    - the controller have nothing to do with the machine, apart it was found ''in the same trash''

-he can't open is thing because his identity will be revealed .
(uh? i mean, his name is marked on the mother board or something( he could still cencure it!)? or the name of the compagny that had the thing? first , its sure it was
in a sony trash if it was really found in a trash, its still a early prototype!) . second, Hey ! he found this in a trash! why is name would be revealed? )

    - it says '' not for resell'' on a big sticker so he can't sell it.

-there's a big paint spot (certainly with the paint sony had in the trash at the same time , uh?) ...but by watching at it clloser, you can see the paint was under the white paint, which is terribly strange.)

-he can't just make a picture with the led on, can't figure what is the ''good reason'' for this.
    -------------------------------

if there's no chip, rom, eprom , eeprom , or whatever else marked sony on it inside the thing , there's nothing that can link sony with this thing, simple.

Fist of all, I would love to know how you know exactly what kind of ports are on this machine. The pictures do not show the machine at every perspective. Also, keep in mind that Sony was planning on making a stand alone unit. That could have been one of the controller designs for that particular unit, seeing as it looks similar to the SNES pad.

The unit was a Sony item, and the controller was a Sony item. So far, that is the only link I know that they share. However, there may be some ports on that unit that we don't know about, seeing as we have yet to see it from all sides.

    1-
2- then , if the controller is for the stand alone system, it have nothing to do with that add-on for the super nintendo.

3- How can you be sure the ''thing'' is a sony item?

4- yeah, but that's a strange thing. Why, if there was some ports, why would he show them? i think it would have been the most , or one of the most intersting angle he could have pictured. that's one of the so many foggy things about this suposed snes cd proto made by sony, if there was only more informations or pictures, we could be sure of something! but don't say me its clear its a sony proto of the snes cd add-on!

OK, sorry for not naming names, but its late and I can't be bothered to scroll back again - and yes I already forgot! hehe.

To whoever asked why I'm adamant: well, whilst you lot were squabbling like children, I was doing some research and trying to get solid evidence, that's how ;-)

To cahaz and the person who asked about the d-pad:

Originally, Sony weren't making a stand-alone unit, no. I believe after the falling out, they decided to... it became the Playstation.

Back in the days of the NES, Nintendo patented their design of D-pad. I seem to remember something coming up over Sony using it, which is why they had to go for the design with the split buttons. It looks to me like they were using something along the lines of Nintendo's back here. It is quite possible that they were looking at this design around the time of the SNES CD development.

What I'm saying - this could indeed be a PSX controller, or it could be Sony's suggestion for a new SNES controller. Look at it, the basic shape of the SNES pad is there, the layout - perhaps they wanted to introduce a new pad with this machine, with extra buttons? It is possible, after all Sega did it with MegaDrive. Then, they took its design for their own creation. This is just a suggestion, but it is a possibility. AND, cahaz, a plausible connection between the SNES CD and the pad.

As to those who doubted its authenticity due to the serial plug - you obviously don't know a lot about console prototyping. That is a very common thing in the development stage of a machine - look at the Katana, still got Saturn ports! You use what you have lying around at that stage. A 9 pin D-sub connector is very common, so why not use that? It is often a prototype for a console that hasn't been finalised yet... of course it won't have the production plug on it!

    1. Still does not explain how you know exactly what ports are on the machine since he did not say anything about them.

    2. Exactly.

    3. Because it is not from Phillips. Sony was the only other company that was going to design the machine. I am not so sure it is fake anymore. Retro brought up some great points.

    4. I would love to see what kind of ports this thing has.

It may be just me, but it seems like you are die hard in your view that this thing is fake. I am wondering why. Like retro said, it would cost way too much money to put together such an item, for a prank that would only be targeted to the hardcore group of people dedicated to prototypes and dev. machines (aka ASSEMbler), which is a small group, it just is not worth it. Dont be a doubter cahaz ;-)

I don't see where this idea of this costing so much would come from. It looks like it could be done for $100 and some spare time.

Honestly, the guy just should post some pics of the ports, if this is indeed a proto and not some sort of "model" or something. Maybe even have a pic of the thing turned on. Wouldn't be very difficult.

The thing just looks sketchy. I mean look at it. It looks like it is made out of filing cabinets from the 80's. :smt042 I'm not trying to be terribly reluctant in saying it's real, but what makes it so real? The pics show basically nothing.

1- yeah, me too. i doubt nintendo would have let sony making their own machine take could run ninty games on it (well, it look a bit like the phillips story when said like this) . ninty would have rather obligated someone who whant to play a ninty cd game purshase a super nintendo and the add-on , much better to them i think. true, nintendo make more cash on their games than on their system for a long time, but cash is still cash.

2- True, but the direction button you see on this controller isn't really The nintendo's d-pad , its like the sega style , the one sega made to not be attacked by ninty . the nintendo d-pad is literally a cross ( i don't know why the nintendo censure team let this pass! :smt043 ) , a just like the dc one (i don't know how sega did their controllers like tihis and that nintendo said nothing, strange)

if sony had the rights to do another snes controller for their add-on, im pretty sure they would have made it with the nintendo cross, they were parteners with ninty , right? but its simply not the case on this one. and if we say there wasn't any stand alone system made at the same time of the super nes add-on, then the colors and style would have been like the snes one, not like the final product, right?

3-could be possible , but as said in point 2, the direction button isn't a cross and the stylle and color match perfectly the psx. :\

4- good point , but the guy said it, its a psx dev controller prototype.

yeah, but i don't understand the reason why somes are so sure about it to be real. there's just nothing to really proove it. the only thing that relly it that it fit into a snes , it have a hole for cds, and.... well, nothing else. the controller don't fit here at all imo. so, let erase the controller a minute.... do you see anything else that proove its from sony? i don't say its a fake either, it could be a fake , like it could be a snes cd addon made by sony (but i doubt it allot, there's just not enough info and pic , like i've said.) or it could be something else, why not? or maybe assembler cotized themselves and made this thing to fool us , no? ok , ok... am i at surprise surprise or something? :smt043

    exact.

yup, and that concord to what i've thought, the controller was for the final psx project as we know , so the controller have no reasons to be there anymore , no? :smt045

notice the X and O place, i wonder why they changed it?

If that thing is "associated" with the SNES and was supposedly developed for the SNES, it's a fake.

    à

this isn't a fake , you could see it in an exposition , as well as other prtotype. but the thing is, this thing was developed for the snes, it was for the sony-only psx. you can see the design (like the two crosses made in the plastic itself , at each side of the pad.)of it , the color and the psx sign are the same

now, could someone tell me what's the link with sony to the suposed snes cd proto. if the controller , the only thing that rellied to sony (apart the link with nintendo years ago) , isn't a good proof anymore?

to me , it could be made by allot of other compagnies, made phillip, or mabe that thing isn't THE snes addon at all? mabe something else? or maybe a fake? everything is said here isn't impossible.

we are on a big pist! :smt045

If someone had access to this PSX proto pad, chances are they have decent enough contacts to get the SNES PSX prototype.

I doubt that very much. Think of how many different types of pad were made. Nothing of how many dup.s of those were made to let people test/work with them. We're talking hundreds.

There's no way there is that many SNES CDs around.
