    wow, nintendo really is revolutionary....sarcasm

except for that huge booming industry called DVD player games. Playing with a remote sound like it'll suck ass, and no matter how nintendo dolls it up, it's still one handed controlling with an attachable joystick you hold in the other hand. Whats the fucking point of going this far out of the box to make a statement? I guess they figured they didn't alienate 3rd party developers enough with the gamecube.

I can easily see a majority of 3rd party developers ignoring the functions mentioned here..

lol the controller looks like it is destined to be in 747's everywhere.
I'm sure it will probably end up being cool with the motion sensing and stuff. At the least playing games on the Revo will be a lot different to the other consoles.

Think about using it with RTS games. Simply move your hand to the unit(s) you want, hold down the button and drag your hand back.
Or something like Doom. Say a demon jumps out of nowhere and surprises you. You jump back so you're hand moves and you aim goes off and you struggle quickly to get it back in the sights and pull the trigger.
These are just exsisting genres, I'm sure Nintendo have some crazy shit dreamed up for it.

Wouah this video is quite interesting, gone is the time we all seat like dead potatoes in front of the console with a dumb controller.

I can see the potential now, imagine playing Soul Calibur or Dead or Alive with this ah ah ah it makes the PS3 and Xbox 360 a bit too conventional now to me.

    Wait and see

No matter what it was, people were going to knock it. If it's different, it's too different, if it'similar to anything, then it's not different enough.

    I myself find it intriguing.
I haven't been part of the Nintendo bandwagon for years, and I haven't bought any Nintendo system made this decade (and the last nintendo system I bought was the N64, less than a year ago) - but this new thing does look VERY interesting to me. Nintendo's controllers have been off the norm, always. The NES did away with the Joystick, the Snes started the shoulder button trend, the N64 was weird to hold and had both the cross and the analogue stick, the Gamecube re-ordered and had only one left shoulder (let's not forget the Virtual Boy either!). I don't know whether this one will succeed or not, but I see Sony and Microsoft (or whomever is trendy in some years) copying it if it does. It's happened before.

Before the Nintendo-bashing begins, let's see more info. I'm not saying this is sure to be a hit, but it's definitely not sure for failure either.

Irony: Some guy in The GIA, many years ago, did predict this for the next Playstation; a separate controller with a component for each hand. I don't recall who he was, but I'm sure he's either very frustrated or laughing his ass off today.

Edit: Another thing that intrigues me is how this will work with the supposed Gamecube compatibility. That'll be interesting to see.

The Revolution has on top a lid. When you open it, it has inside 4 standard Gamecube controller ports and Gamecube memroy slots...I can see Nintendo in the future ditching all this for a cheaper smaller unit.

Nintendo just lost my vote - here's hoping 3rd parties will do wireless NES/SNES/N64/GC controller clones because I really can't see myself with that - FFS remotes as they are do a crap job of interactive DVD's god knows how they expect it to perform.

I'm not knocking using 1 hand - there was a single handed N64 controller, I forgot who made it but it was actually quite good (not as good as Official 2 hand though), but the remote has almost no ergonomics whatsoever!

Wow, this is not what I was expecting at all. It looks (visualy) like crap, but then again its not a final design so it doesn't matter. But after reading the gamespot article, and watching that video that kotodama posted, I can see how it could make for an interesting gameplay experiance. I can see it taking developers a while to figure out how to use properly, but once they do we should see some amazing stuff using this device.

Now if only they would include HD resolution support already...

    AMAZING.

    SIMPLY AMAZING.

See this key here Nintendo? This is the key to something important.

    What? My heart?

No, Nintendo. My wallet. Take it. Please. Now.

(it's a metaphoric key. You know)

I'm mean seriously, have any of you seen the trailer?! That thing works not just as a standard contoller...it can be used as a fishing rod, a light gun, a racing "wheel"...it can sense up, down, left, right and of course, tilt.

It also seems to offer unprecedented level of control on FPS type games with the analog add on...yes, that could be even better than the tried and tested Keyboard and mouse. And being able to use it also as a NES controller? Excelent.

YOU HAVE TO SEE THE TRAILER, really, to see the posibilities:

    http://media.cube.ign.com/articles/651/651334/vids_1.html

Now, I only hope Nintendo does not dissapoint with games and the implementetion of the new controller, hopefuly more practical and not as gimmicky as some of the DS games.

    are you high?!

how the hell are you going to play a FPS with that... yeah take your sniper out and lets see...

For a fps it has to be a really sensative... but if they make it really sensative you wont be able to hold the position for very long before losing your aim.

    This is how :)

    http://www.gamespot.com/news/2005/09/15/screens_6133335.html?page=4

They had Metroid Prime:Echoes modifed to use the controller.

    From Gamespot:

The attachment basically gave the game a much more PC-first-person-shooter feel thanks to the ability to free-look and aim with the main controller by moving it anywhere you wanted. The analog stick controlled your movement. The A button let you jump, while the B button fired your weapon. The shoulder buttons on the analog attachment let you switch visors, scan, and lock on to targets, although the lock-on feature was less necessary thanks to the precision firing available via just looking around with the controller. You could shift to the morph ball by pressing the select button on the main controller's face, which felt surprisingly comfortable to do in the middle of action.

I've only read the IGN article, but I really like the idea. They made some valid points, though, about the controller putting off potential developers. It'll definately cut down the amount of shit released on the revolution, as companies wont easily be able to port games from other consoles onto it. At least, not without making some serious tweaks to how the game is controlled.

Are people on this thread just looking at the picture without reading the article? That's the only explaination I can think of for the remote control comparisons. It only LOOKS like a remote control.

Reading about Metroid Prime, and thinking about that kind of first person game; this controller sounds like the best control system yet for such games. It's far better than two analogue controllers and it might even beat the keyboard & mouse set up if it weren't for the scarcity of buttons.

The one major concern I do have is: how the hell are you supposed to use the B and C buttons when holding it vertically? Not with any kind of speed from the looks of things. They seem to have been place where they are solely from the point of view of making the controller useable for games from the earlier system.

[edit] Just after looking at the picture of it again. A possible fix for the inaccessible B and C buttons would be to put them on the side of the controller. (Think about it: thumb on A/D-pad, index finger on trigger, three other fingers on the side of the controller doing nothing. (Take a look at the photo in the post above this if you can't visualize it.))

[edit] Oh, the trigger IS the B button and the buttons on the bottom are also a and b buttons. Still... that's not a lot of buttons, even with the additional two on the analogue stick plug-in.

So let me get this straight, if you want to use more than 3 (three) action buttons, you need the analogue placenta in your other hand? but then of course, you can only reach the A button as you have to hold it vertically.

Nintendo, you have lost another sale here.
