When I first had a look at the pictures I thought "what is this crap?" but after reading the articles and watching the videos I instantly changed my mind and thought "this is so crazy it might just work" the only problem is see is that most people will only see the picture and think "what is this crap?" and not actually read on and discover that this might be a good idea. but I still hope that they will make a snes controller to plug in as an extension on the rev. pad... cuz... I just would think it would feel kinda weird otherwise ;)
but for n64 I think it actually _could_ work with the standard controller.. if you use the d-pad as those small yellow buttons (and of course this will only work in games that dosn't use the d-pad in the game ;D)

I did read the articles..and see the video. I just think a lot of people wont want to wave things around or whatever when they play games. I don't, but I also had zero interest in donkey konga or the eye toy or anything like that. Like I said, this is brilliant if you watch children play, they are very animated...but this thing may be more than kids can play with. A simple pad could have done the same things as this.

I don't know about this guys, after watching that video the only thing i could think about was how stupid I would look doing all that crap alone, by myself in my bedroom. Becasue unlike in that video most games are played in a solitary enviroment. When the videogames come on at a party that's usually a sign that the party is starting to wind down (well, the boozing and hitting on chicks part at least.) Think about it, you play maybe fighting games with another person, and once in a while get a multiperson game going like Mario cart or something. Every other game that involves multiplayer is over the internet, so technically you're still alone. Except this time you'll be alone waving the controller around like a boob.

It could be fun, but how successful it is depends on how precise the motion tracking is. I thought the N64 controller looked wierd too, but it's saving grace was that it was dead on accurate. A game with shitty controls on the N64 was the game's fault, not the controllers'. I have a feeling here that if the motion tracking is too loose it's going to be hard to get precise movements down, leading to tons of frustration.

Of course we'll see. No doubt they'll come out with a more traditional controller for those of us who can't adapt. I can see lots of kids having a very good time with this controller through, waving it around and such. If I was 12 this would be awsome, but I'm not 12. Anyway... crazy rant is now over.

Glad to see a more sceptical set of posts for sure. Another forum i post on everyone pretty much is hard in anticipation of this controller.

For me there are just not enough buttons, the ergonomics are abysmal, all in all nice idea, poor looking execution.

Sorry guys, this is sheer industrial design brilliance. After watching the "trailer" demonstrating the uses for the controller, I'm hooked and I'll be pre-ordering my first system ever -- the Revolution.

I can't trust Sony's QA and all the Xbox has ever been good for in my opinion is modding the thing to hell and back.

This is what REAL innovation looks like. The Virtual Boy was a POS, sure, but I think Nintendo has finally gotten it right.

Guys, waving something around to control something is fun for 10 minutes. After that it's bloody annoying. My phone is fully motion censored. I can control EVERYTHING with the motion sensor including menus, dialing and so on as well as games. After looking like a tit for 10 minutes I went back to the d-pad. It's a gimmick and nothing more. Imagine playing a multi player game and having everyone swing their control in the way of the telly !! That would drive me mad. Even playing games with people who tilt a pad and lean everywhere bloody annoys me to no end. I remember playing Ridge Racer with a friend that did that. What a twat ! The thing is that I play games to relax. I don't want to be using the skills of balance to enjoy a game. What happens if you've got a shaky hand?

Take one controller in each hand. If you want to, hold it so the expansion port is facing away from you and plug in a little box with sand in it. Shake both controllers.

Now, holding both controllers normally, point the front of it straight up. It's like holding two joysticks, with a thumb and finger button.

Nintendo Revolution! The new home of Samba de Amigo and Virtual On!

one would hope this thing polls input at a much higher rate than a cell phone for a much smoother experience similar to a mouse, and from the wired article it sounds like it will (talking about playing metroid prime 2 with it):
you know this sounds really intuitive/comfortable to me, as when i play fps's on pc i use a psx joystick to move and a gun mouse to aim and shoot, and i do quite well with it. this setup they have sounds strikingly similar

I'm still confused... How i'm going to play MGS on it? Zelda? Fighting games?

It's just too weird (and i thought the PS3 controller was weird). I'm not saying it's not functional, but i didn't liked it.

I doubt even the Japanese will warm to it... actually saying that, they love the DS...

They should have just done like everyone thought, a souped up GameCube pad, with a touchscreen in the middle. It would still be shit, but at least you don't have to look like a gimp trying to remember which half of the pad is motion sensitive in the middle of a frantic Metroid battle.

Who says that it has to use the damn motion sensor. Dont use it, and its like any other controller, except it looks comforable for bigger peoples since the hands are cramped up. Im actually quite impressed by it, and cant wait

Another device which will connect to the expansion port is a more traditionally designed controller, which will allow players to control the Nintendo back catalogue titles which the Revolution can play.

Also taking into account the thing has gamecube ports on it, you can just use a gamecube pad if you want "standard" or "traditional" gaming dynamics

Have any of you used a gyration mouse? They are very nice, and after 5 minutes you can use it no problems. This is the tech being used in the revolution controller most likely, since nintendo have invested much money intothe company.

I'm looking forward to it. I don't give 2 shits about non-exclusive games - Nintendo hasn't been best for that since the snes, and I feel that the exclusive games will be great.

Carrying on from the point I made slightly further up (that people apeared to just ignore)

    http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=60917

Eurogamer: How is the controller going to work with games that aren't designed specifically for the Revolution - multi-platform titles and so on?

Jim Merrick: We're producing a classic-style expansion controller, based on traditional designs like the Gamecube controller. It's like a shell with a hole in the top into which you slot the freehand-style controller, and then you can play third-party ported games, and retro Nintendo games you've downloaded.

So there's that option - but even while it's inserted into the classic-style shell, the freehand controller will still be able to sense positioning and so on, so there are more options too.

It's something that's just as true for the DS - not every game uses the DS's unique features. But some multi-platform titles do, like The Sims 2 for example. We hope other developers will do the same and look at ways their multi-platform titles can make use of the Revolution's features.

So the way I see it... you can handle games in the standard manner, with a standard controller AND you can do the new fangled stuff too... Thus allowing the Revolution to do what the PS3 and XBox360 can do as far as gaming goes, but also do new things that they can't.

Sounds like a pretty good deal to me.
