I've always had this weird immunity to "freaky" stuff... anyway, since we're talking back when I was a wee lad and still tugging through them school books and stuff. Battle of Olympus -I bet no one saw this one coming. There was just something about the boss tune in this game that'd freak me out. Be it waking up that darned rock throwing giant thing or any of the other areas that played the weirdo boss music... It just somehow creeped me out. Diablo -Not as much creeping me out, but the first time I encountered the Butcher... major panic attack! Daggerfall -I dunno why, but I've always had this thing against ghosts in video games. Ghosts are kinda like the half-way god mode enemies in games. Often immune to a lot of shit and often crawling out from where you least expect (or want) them to. VENGEANCE!!! (The asshole at Bethesda that set the volume levels for things in Daggerfall should be afraid of encountering me in a dark alley)
Well RE games make me really nervous and impatient, and I freaked out a little bit with RE 1 and 2. But the game that really freaked me out as a kid was the point and click adventure game Legend of Kyrandia, Malcolm was way too creepy.
Haha, I had a weird (magician type) friend with a Kyrandia poster in his room. It was of Malcolm in a tree. I had no idea it was a game at the time, but I thought it was pretty creepy.
The sound effects in the atari 2600 version of Pitfall.. For some reason the deafening silence mixed with the death sound effect just made me shivver when I was young. I can still feel it now having just thought about it. Many a night was spent in front of the TV with the sound off haha!
Chiller. It was sadistic. You shot a naked woman who screamed as her flesh was torn away by your crossbow. I kept losing in the game until I realized you WEREN'T supposed to protect the people, but kill them..... :-( http://www.somebits.com/~nelson/weblog-files/centerimages/chiller.png
Wow, some really interesting answers guys. It's kind of odd getting to look at things like this, that dont affect me now, but to think they freaked you out... weird.
Duke Nukem 3D - At one point you go down an elevator and turn around to find a pig cop right in your face. First time I remember freaking out because of a game. Buck Rogers - Countdown to Dooms day - Level 2 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q0-0GUpHNlk Very creepy music and atmosphere for a genesis game, and my first rpg. Recently: Condemned - It just bleak
Silent Hill 2 is the only game to ever creep me out (and I wasn't a kid). I tried making doom a little more scarry with the lights out at 2am with headphones but it didn't really do it for me.
tomb raider 2,the first level i was just walking around OUT OF THE FREAKING BLUE:2 tigers attacking me turned off the game and didnt touch it untill last year
what also gave me some good goosebumbs was that laughing from the villain boss at the begining of rolling thunder (arcade).
What's so scary about RE? If anything the horrid dialogue should have made it a campy experience. One game that gave me dread was Bioforge on the PC. I hated that game for some reason.
Project Zero/Fatal Frame Even now I can't play more than an hour at a time before I have to turn it off. It's a masterpiece of suspense. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nIjWuislEoE&feature=related This is literally me when I play this game, just without the screaming.
As a kid the first Silent Hill freaked me out, it was actually those flying creatures you'd see. (Don't remember what they were called).
