Only Resident Evil, it's really the only game that scared the shit out of me while playing. (1) zombie on the ground first level, looks dead but grabs your foot (2) the dogs breaking the glass.. No other game even came close to scaring me while playing.
Anyone have any particular music tracks that spooked them? Even from games that are designed to be scary perhaps? Viridian Forest unsettled me, as did the dungeon music in the original Zelda..!
Uncle Joe's got a Surprise in his Pocket was definitely not one of my favorites. Not sure if he's on the streets these days.
YES! Sinistar was pretty frightening. I also used to spaz out when playing Paperboy. The controls in that isometric viewpoint didn't work out too well for me.
The only game that really freaked me out.. was Silent Hill (PS1) but i wasn't a kid.. think it was about 2 years after i graduated highshcool!!!
I'd say Splatterhouse, too, but the arcade version went up and above. I mean, for a game in the 1980s, you had dismembered, twitching body parts as the backgrounds of the first level. If only the remake is that haunting...
Come to think of it, Alien vs Predator on the Atari Jaguar also freaked the shit out of me when the predator started whispering stuff.
Now you mention Resi there is one part in Resident Evil on the ps1 that really scared me or gave me the shits and i can't remember if its was in the 2nd game or Nemesis as it was that long ago? It was in the Stars building in a narrow corridor where i'd walked through once before but on the way back i seemed to walk close to the windows and outta nowhere was this hand which burst through the window and grabbed me. I must have jumped out my skin so much as it was soo unexpected.
I know it doesn't sound like much compared to todays games, but Rogue for the Atari ST used to scare the hell out of me. Not because of the graphics (16 colors sprites, no animation) but because of the ambience and the fact that dying meant that you'd loose everythng. The worst of all was to meet a Troll deep inside the dungeon. These encounters would get me out of my seat ! not because they looked scary, but because they meant certain death.
Welcome to the boards |kermel|, good to have an old-timer around. If you're talking creepy, I can vouch for Castlevania on the NES. It was as scary as I had seen at the time and then came Doom - although with Doom there was a certain feeling that made you enjoy the decadence.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Endorfun This freaked me out only for the 10 minutes of media fury it evoked. "Subliminal messages in games? It's an outrage!" Still can't bring myself to play it for fear of becoming a new age zombie...
LOL if I remember correctly then there was a Subliminal message in an Amiga game, saying "do not copy this game", but lo and behold even that game was copied. So take it easy Sir.
Tomb Raider on the Saturn. I had no idea a TRex was going to chase me It killed me as she missed grabbing a ledge. Also, Tempest on the BBC Micro. And Granny's Garden. This too.
haha the psygnosis logo with that evil owl always scared me as a kid playing amiga 500 :crying: wasent (and have never really been) freaked out by any of the games i played tho..
Forest temple was creepy. Shadow temple had some disturbing moments too, especially that weird looking white coloured zombie-blob
When I was like 10 or 11 or so, my father got me this pirate famiclone cart that was pretty much the game "armadillo" with Super Mario 3 sprites pasted on it. Mario turned into a ball and everything was so... bizarre, and in japanese, and with weird music... I don't know why, but every time I played the thing it scared the living fuck out of me. I traded it in quickly. I got Shadow of the Ninja, which was awesome, btw.
Agony is the name of that Amiga game. Where the owl is the hero, and actually it is a pretty great shooter.
