Hey people. Just wondering.. A very broad question. What games, or music from games, freaked you out when you were little? My most prominent example is here. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2-sH0l29pfY My Dad got an old CPC from the bootsale. My christ, this music freaked me out so much, as did the game. It really scared me. The sounds generated by the CPC suit this kind of music so very well. It still sends shivers down my spine- its amazing. My Dad also, back in the day, borrowed a Mega Drive when they were brand new. There was an Aliens game. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iDlJhZLcCQ4&feature=related Just found this, and it is conjuring it up from deep inside me.. the resonating bass.. although I recall it being slower (curse you PAL) I was tiny back then- with my Master System. God, that scared me- aliens bursting out of people's chests. I remember the system seeming so.. adult.. the logo, the design.. just woah. A bit older.. a friend got a super cool PSone. This music haunted me. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rwNt_9GvpFI And the demo of Wipeout 2097.. the countdown timer (eer.. eeeer.. EEER. EEEER. *Explode*) creeped me, and the music was amazing to me. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=boLnfGE_vjQ This got me into electro for the most part. The games menus were so.. god, so minimalistic, so cool. If you havent heard that track before,, I implore you to listen to it properly. Better quality at his web site, just google Cold Storage, if you are interested. So share with me. What music, graphics, or gameplay really freaked you out as a kid?
i used to be scared of getting killed in golden eye. First person view+amazing graphics+Atmospheric music+ realistic guns+ 360 degree levels+ me playing my first fps at 8, in secret from my parents+ death animation= trying to get to the end of the level like if my life depended on it.
Duke Nukem 3D, Tomb Raider and Diablo. I think that's a feeling of protection that shows up when you are completely immersed in the game. (And don't want a single scratch =P) The same don't happen in Super Mario 64, for example. Sometimes you get yourself falling on purpose to make things better(or faster) because you know that the energy can be easily replenished. It's one of my favorite games, tough. In Sonic games the same can be seen when you want all the rings, but it's not like protection, it's more an effort to avoid annoying feelings. ^^' EDIT: Resident Evil too, and Jedi Knight, and a lot more! I'm so easily scared lol...
Resident Evil. The commercials alone scared me as a kid. Also, the shark from Banjo Kazooie was pretty terrifying too.
Festers Quest on the NES was really creepy. Horrible music, dark environments. Had that sadistic edge that some NES games had as well.
Dead Space was awesome. The first time that thing grabbed me and dragged me through the corridor... loved it. I've been playing the AvP multiplayer demo and I've been genuinely freaked out when I play as a marine. Aliens and Predators comin' out of nowhere, crawling on walls and crap. I got so scared once that my heart actually started hurting.
Lifeforce Tenka (PS1) I was home alone, playing some games I'd rather have my parents not see me playing. There was something about the atmosphere that made me shut down the console pretty quickly. Resident Evil (or was it part 2?!?) Home alone again, tried to be a big boy and play the big boys games... Well.... needed new sheets in the middle of the night Today I can laugh about all those games.
The intro sequence of the old PC game Monster Bash (seen in this video about 10 seconds in) used to freak me out as a kid, and every time I played I had to try to skip that scene as quickly as possible.
There was a game I remember playing years ago on the computer. It was a black and white, point and click game. Basically you had to make your way through a maze and try to find a key, if I remember right. And every so often you would run into a mummy. All you could do is run or it'd kill you. There's nothin' scarier they clicking the back button to turn around and start clicking your way through the maze knowing that this mummy was right behind you.
Not sure about "as a kid" but 2 titles that freaked me out were "Silent Hill", which has to be one of the best PS1 titles going and was utterly nail biting to play. The other was the PS2 version of "Alone in the Dark", which in places had me jumping up off the sofa and wrestling with the controller to just get the hell away from some of the beasts! Here's me a grown man and fan of the horror genre as well, embarrassing!
