Well it wasn't scary per se, I just couldn't handle the monster closet concept very well. Or rather, the spawning-out-of-nowhere concept. If I clear an area with no entrances, exits or hiding places, I expect it to stay clear, or at least behave in a predictable way (eg leave screen, reenter, everything's been reset). And yeah, it was a hard game, way harder than any game without mouse aiming will probably ever be without becoming unplayable. I have no idea why there's so few games using this (awesome, imo) control scheme.
I'm not from the people who freak out easily with videogames, movies e.t.c. but one of the games that freaked me out like crazy was Dino Crisis 2 (I was in high school when I was playing this game), expecially when I was hearing the footsteps of tyrannosaurus which they were making me think "Is he close? Is he far away? Holy sh*t!".
I remember Alien vs. Predator on the Jaguar was fairly intense when I first encountered it. Also, that Space Hulk game on Saturn (on other consoles too I imagine) was fairly intense when playing the skirmishes or whatever. Always creepy to hear your teammates dying around you and then getting slaughtered by some alien. Can't really think of anything else though... Edit: Oh! Carrier on Dreamcast was creepy as hell.
That Space Hulk game, now that you mention it, shit me right up as a kid. The PC one from the early 90s.
Basically all the MD games. For some reason I always found the 16bit graphics of this console to be kinda creepy:-0 I wish I could have known of the super nintendo back in the days... However I don't regret being (have been) a Sonic fan. I never got into Mario's games though, I hate his mustache.
This wouldn't be what you'd call a 'proper game' but there used to be this game that relied on a video cassette and an infra red device in the shape of a gun. It was a kind of on-the rails shooter where you had to zap aliens with the blaster to defend the planet. I found the sound effects and BGM quite scary when I was a child. Don't remember the name of it and probably would be lame now. Anyone remember these games?
You're talking about an ActionMax game, for sure. But it generally came packed in with "Sonic Fury" - which was about fighter jets. It did have some trailers for other tapes.
