Resident Evil games have always been good at scaring the piss outta me, it also helps that i play em in the dark with my surround sound ( or stereo before that) cranked. Horror movies wont make me jump the slightest bit, but RE games do it regularly.

I remember in RE2, during the second scenarios, you go into a room and light some flames, causing Mr.X to come crashing thru the wall, and a gear to drop, you pick up the gear and drop mr.x ( after a fuckton of ammo), and leave, only for him to come crashing thru the wall in the hallway while your leaving! I may have poo'ed a little but the first time i experienced that, dont remember lol.

More recently, the first time i seen the El Gigante in RE4 i was freaking out. The first time i seen the Uroboros ( 1st encounter) in RE5 had almost the same effect.

Other than the RE games, i cant really think of any others that made me jump/scared/whatever. I havent had the chance to play dead space yet though, hopefully that is as good as everyone makes it out to be!

    I remember more now!

-Certain parts of Sonic 1. (Memory is hazy.) Most definitely the Robotnik boss battles. I mean fuck, man:

-Siren, of course ;) I walked out of my room (lights were off.) and it was 3:00 in the morning, with a strange glow coming out of my window. I actually got a little delusional, thinking that shibito actually existed.

-Ambushing the "cave dweller" in the beginning of The Elder Scrolls: Redguard.

-Redjack: Revenge of the Brethren. My sound card had issues, so the dialogue would cut in and out; and that made it freakier.

-Hotel Mario. (I think it was the Van Wig guy's lair.)

-The demo to Alone in the Dark was poop-pants-tastic! I was so sad when it was erased off of my hard drive...

-The hanging man in Fear Effect 2 gave me troubling nightmares. And funny enough, it was like, only one of three truely "scary" moments in both games.

EDIT: How could I forget this?! It fucked me up for life!

This thread can be condensed to 1-2 pages because every other post either mentions RE or SH or both.

Also, the fact that you found RE scary indicates you're of the PS1 generation. A resounding "feh" ensues. :D (nothing personal, just business!)

Some classic scary moments like the dogs breaking the windows in RE1, Doom/Doom2 enemies like Cyberdemon, Arch-ville and so on, Silent Hill's Pyramid Head,...

Still, i just couldn't play Siren (PS2). The demo movie i have from a TGS DVD already scared me enough. Seriously, i don't know if it's the japanese language that helped it getting more scary, but i simply don't want to play it. :-(

Anyway, i just got Dead Space, and it's scaring the crap out of me. And i just started the game! Curiously i only found out about it during this year's E3. All media and presentation of Dead Space 2 made me wonder: How i missed the first game?! Maybe i should've checked this topic before, since there's other Dead Space fans here as well.

Other games worth mentioned? Doom 3 and it's expansion were really scary as well. The whole darkness situations and choosing between flashlight or gun helped a lot.

I love these space-theme games, and i hate that there's not a single decent game based on the Aliens movie.

I can't say it enough, Dead Space rules!! Easily in my top 10 games this gen. Maybe even top 5. I'm really looking forward to the second one and I'm glad more people are playing the first.

I'm a bit too old to have been scared by games ( I'm 34) but I did find ShadowMan on the dreamcast disturbing at times. I mostly play in the dark at night you see.

The last boss in Kirby's Adventure used to scare the hell out of me when I was 2 or so (and also serves as one of my first memories, lol).

Silent Hill 2 and 3 have given me some pretty damned good scares late at night/early in the morning with all the lights off and on my own, more than any other game that I've played so far. How would Siren/Fatal Frame compare (but don't spoil for me lol)? Any others on PS2 that I should try too?

Never really been scared by a game but RE:Code Veronica had a very creepy vibe about it, in particular the videos of the two children killing the insects.

    Never finished that game.

I've been scared a few times, let's see:

    - When I was really young there was this text adventure (in Dutch) where you would have to venture into Dracula's castle. Although only text it scared the bejeeses out of me every time Dracula snuck up on me and ripped out my throat.

    - System Shock 2: don't remember the level but at one point the droning noise of the ships engines stops and this was very unnerving. Especially because of that you could hear enemies approaching far better.

    - Project Zero 1: I was not able to pass even the intro level. All the ghosts and you weapon-less? Brrrr

    - Dead Space: good for a few in your face scares but the ones in the vacuum of space are the best.

Abuse. It's dark. Really, really dark. The Doom III of its time. And shitloads of monsters are spawning out of fucking nowhere all the time.

I also got one that's not really meant to be scary: Sim Ant. There you are, a random tiny ant, running around without a care in the world... Then at some point you come across the huge fucking spider!

Thought I was about the only person to play that game...or the only one to remember playing it, anyway. Never thought it was particularly scary, but it was a great game with a nice (although pretty cryptic) level editor and capabilities for modding that were way before its time.

I think the most interesting thing about Abuse was the keyboard+mouse control scheme for a platform shooter.

    Hard game, as I remember.
