Well 3 of my high school/uni friends had dreamcasts, none had saturns, so for it's about familiarity.
I only got a DC about 8-9 months ago myself, but I think it holds up well, even in the 3D department, some very nice games for it.
Of course some dodgy ones too but focusing on that quickly leads nowhere with any system.

I mean firing up Crazy Taxi, Soul Calibur or Jet Set Radio is still pretty much as fun today as around release.
+for the VGA output, I mean even the more casual retro people will be able to hook it up easy for years to come.

The piracy aspect is also a boon to the DC's legacy among casual retro gamers today. That is to say, it is really easy for a casual gamer who buys a DC for $10 at a fleamarket to download and play any popular or rare expensive game in the DC's library at 98% close to the experience of playing a retail copy. If more people have played Border Down, Cosmic Smash, Under Defeat, Ikaruga, and 20 or 40 other DC games etc, in VGA, on their hdtv, and they enjoyed it or were impressed with the system and its library that they got to experience first hand, there are going to be more people able to talk about the experience online.

But at the same time Saturn Emulation has gotten REALLY REALLY good I'd say having played most games Both Emulated and on Real Hardware it's 89-90% pure.

A lot of it is also due to the age of players and accessibility to games. The Saturn was around before rampant internet downloads. Back then a lot of people just couldn't download big files plus many of todays gamers were still little kids in the age of the Saturn. For me personally the Saturn is far more attractive than the Dreamcast. The Dreamcast had many great games BUT the Saturn had far more plus it was a massive jump from the likes of the Mega Drive and SFC/SNES. Sure, the DC was also a big jump up from the Saturn but it didn't seem as magical.

Saturn also tried and tried right up till the end of it's life in 2000. It had way more big arcade ports that were better than any other system at the time, it had a pad that was perfect (Japanese and later Euro style), it had many innovative games such as NiGHTS and let's not forget that Shenmue was originally a Saturn game. Sega and other companies really tried to push the Saturn (in Japan) but it seemed as if they had just ran out of steam (and money) by the middle of the Dreamcast's life.

Dreamcast will always be the console that pushed gaming forward. Forget about N64 fanboys going on about the floppy analogue controller, that had been done many years before on various home formats and consoles. The DC was the first console to introduce quality online gaming with broadband, many new and GOOD franchises that have lasted such as Jet Set Radio, Space Channel 5, Crazy Taxi, MSR (Project Gotham), Sega Tennis series and more. It was also the first console to have screens on memory cards that were actually useful. It was the first console to output VGA quality. It was the first in many ways and for that the Dreamcast has a special place in history however in hardcore gaming sense I feel it will always be behind the Saturn.

If you are old enough (in your 30's or up now) you'll know how magical it was to be able to play Capcom arcade ports with real sized character sprites, fluid animation and perfect sound for the first time. You'll also remember that it was the first time to play 3D Sega arcade games in the home, sure they didn’t look as good but the likes of Virtua Cop 1 & 2 and Sega Rally sure looked close and most ports played just like their big arcade brothers.

Thread can be closed now :p

I remember the day I ordered my Dreamcast way back in 1999. I had been out of the game since the SNES and I found out Street Fighter III was coming to the DC So I bought it with SFIII W Impact and MVC2 2 ascii pads (which were shit) But my dad, Cousin and I actually drove up to where he worked at the time ( A Motorola campus actually) and we ordered it from his office.

The story of my Saturn is less romantic, I bought it from a used game store this past December I later found a comic story selling a $60 boxed Saturn recently while looking for a decent clone console.

I think I've missed the joke, but this topic is really weird.
You guys discuss it with so much passion...

It's really sad when some people don't know about the superiority of the Saturn with some games, like X-Men vs. Street Fighter. Some people only know about those great fighting games in the crappy Playstation version.
I think the Dreamcast become more popular than the Saturn because people could really see (and even just believe) the superiority against the main rival of the time.

N64 is another story. It was another level. Much greater.

What makes me sad is all the projects going on to get DC games running from an SD/HDD but nothing like that is in the works for the Saturn.

Now that would be a dream come true for me - I'm starting to notice more of my original games developing small holes right through the discs, and with replacements for certain titles especially getting increasingly expensive with every passing day I can only hope that someone finds a way of perhaps creating such a device that interfaces via the cartridge or expansion port sooner rather than later... surely this has to be technically possible, yes?

And Saturn beats the dreamcast easily with a better videogame library.

Awesome games on SEGA Saturn: 285
Awesome games on SEGA Dreamcast: 176

I only have 1 Dreamcast. I did have 3 in the past though. I do own 2 Saturns (Sega and Hitachi) and 8 Mega Drive 1 consoles!!! They just keep coming as free items when I buy game packs. I threw 3 away last month since I have nobody to give them to around here. Sad I know but they were in the way.

Not really. Space Channel 5 saw a release on the 360 and did pretty well. Jet Set radio is getting the HD make over plus has been on the original XBOX and GBA and soon the 360 & PS3.

Too much work for too little money I'm afraid.
