Well I still use my Megadrive and it runs like it's good as new and it's be running regularly since 1991/1992 D: Not one fault.

Oh those were the days when hardware was half decent. =P

Well, I'm 18 but when I was around 3 or 4 my friend's Dad pulled out his Atari 2600 Jr and me and my friend used to spend hours playing Pong etc. So for me the earliest I can consider playing is Atari 2600. Unfortunately I only own a Woody console unit, no cables or games or pads to go with it currently.

Where's the 5200 option? I know it's the less popular console, but the ports of Pacman and Centipede on it were way more playable than the 2600 counterparts. I lose hours on those games.

I feel like the Famicom/NES is the oldest system that's truly playable for any real amount of time. Even then, it varies by game. I'd say Super Famicom is when a vast majority of games were playable.

It's not simply a chronological thing though. I feel like a higher percentage of SNES games are playable than PSX games, with it's fledgling 3d... some psx games were simply a pixelated MESS.

Last system I played was my megadrive, it's all I have left after my meth induced selling spree. Alot of playstation emulating these days!
Starting again now though... playstation's in the mail.

I collect older but I can only really play as far back as the Famicom and Sega Mark III although I do make an exception for some rare Sega SG-1000 games like Girl's Garden, that game is brilliant.

Commodore 64, which I guess would have to go to the same vote as NES/SMS/MSX...

I can still happily play pong for a half hour or so (if I can find a willing accomplice - rare), But I would probably go with the Colecovision. The arcade ports were amazing back in the day & some still hold up well in 2010. It's grouped here with the VCS & Intellivision, but the Coleco was a step up. Mine's 27 years old & still rocking !

I put Atari 2600 for oldest playable; I can't believe nobody here has mentioned what an absolute classic KABOOM! still is. One of the greatest, most maddeningly addictive games in video game history, and only playable on the Atari VCS (2600) console with a paddle controller. Maze Craze and Space Invaders are also a lot of fun. The unjustly maligned Atari 5200, though, was my fave console as a kid. The arcade adaptations on it completely blew away those on the 2600 and Colecovision. The consoles that get the most play now are NES (love that RetroUSB PowerPak!) and Genesis. Most played games recently are Super Dodge Ball, the Streets Of Rage series, and Lethal Enforcers 1 & 2. PSP gets played the most, however, because I can play all my old favorite console games on the bus to and from work. Plus watch movies.

By the by, it's an absolute crime that there's no Atari VCS icon available.

I can't believe anyone would play the Atari 2600 (VCS). I think it was crap then and crap now. Ofcourse, The 2600 was before my time. So I don't have any attachment to it. But NES I do, which I still believe if I weren't attached to it I would still consider the NES / SMS age the oldest system set that is still playable. Plenty of NES games and a few SMS games I know of that I think are still just as good today as they were back in their day. But then again I'm not very impressed by modern gaming anyway.

My first cartridge console was the Atari, so I do have a nostalgic attachment, but there are a few games that still hold up as extremely fun, such as the ones I mentioned. Especially KABOOM! And, however primitive it may seem today, when it came out it was the king of the roost, everybody who didn't have one wanted one, and if you were of video gaming age back then, trust me, you would have been playing it and loving it. I remember having to go over to my buddy's house to play Space Invaders until my loving parents finally blessed me with one on Christmas day, 1981. Before that, I was ripping up the screen with my black&white Telstar console and its built-in Pong-type games and paddle controls.

Well it's in the era of the Colecovision, etc... :p

The 5200 console was quite good, however the joystick was one of the worse joysticks known to man.

Yes because back then there were such great other consoles like the RCA Studio II, Fairchild Channel F and others which made all the Atari VCS games feel really crap... It wasn't crap then and although a large number of games have aged badly there are still a bucket load of gems that are still playable now.
