Anyone in the US pick one up? What are your first impressions? Have to wait till the end of the month to pick one up here in the UK
I fiddled around with one in target. but I couldn't play anything. The Pad is more comfortable than I thought it would be.
I got mine today , everything is great except for the long loading times. The loading times are far worse than the ps3 , just to go from Wii home to Wii settings takes time , all Games have long updates as well. Other than that it's great.
If it is anytyhing like the wii, there is some crazy dvd emulation. Playing on dev kits without it is amazing. But also nintendo has never been high up on the tech curve, so it wouldn't surprise me if they used a really low speed memory.
I've saw some criticisms about the touch screen being unresponsive missing inputs and such, anyone shared these issues?
Literally seen no adverts for it on TV here in the UK and only after seeing this thread and some googling I learned it was coming out next week!
Disney channel is plugging the shit out of it. I guess Nintendo still wants the kids and knows the hardcore would know anyway. I'll be honest... I SORT OF have an interest now.
To be honest I think Nintendo timed the release perfectly, parents will see the WiiU and will instantly think of the success of the Wii (when it was released anyway) and probably buy their children one for xmas.
Got mine today. Only have Nintendo Land right now, but my fiancee and I had a lot of fun with that. The only frustrating thing is that there seems to be a lot of stress on the Nintendo servers, every time I try to download something it times out. It took me the entire day to download the 5GB firmware update just because it would time out every 30 min or so. I can't even get the Wii Transfer stuff to download. Frustrating. But other than that, it seems nice so far.
I don't think the firmware update was 5GB. If it was, why do I still have 25GB left on the drive? Nintendo said the 32GB model was actually like 29GB and system information takes up ~4.1GB. Which leaves me with ~25GB. If a firmware update was 5GB, don't you think the space would decrease even more after the update? My brother got his today, It's pretty slick(FINGERPRINTS!). But a couple interesting things. No Dolby Digital or DTS for games, no optical audio. You can't do HDMI to DVI and then pass audio out the analog Av out like on the 360/PS3 for the Wii U. But in Wii Mode it seems to work. (wut?) Another thing: The Nintendo Land box has 0 information on what resolutions it supports or what kind of audio it supports. At least the pack in version. I'm guessing the system has a scaler built into it like the 360 Xenos. Which would make not including technical information like that make sense. Since it would scale it to whatever output you have it set to. Gamepad is really ergonomic and the screen looks very nice! Takes a little bit getting used to. I noticed on the gamepad screen while it shows the updating progress bar that it seems there is macroblocking in the background. Which is weird/odd. If you try to hit the home button the Home symbol with a line through it flashes. And if you look at the edges of it, it has the same macroblock like artifacts. Seems to be the only place that has them that I can see. If you look at Reds on the gamepad screen they seem to be pixellated or have compression artifacts (If it does indeed use some form of compressed video or something to send the video feed to the gamepad screen) (Though it does seem like it does something similar to the 3DS by using compressed jpg like images for some assets on the gamepad. It's either that or the video feed. Hard to say. But overall can't complain!) The screen where it shows your Miis looks fantastic and the menu music. OH lord so good! I love how it plays some instruments on the system output and then others on the gamepad speakers. It sounds so cool! The speakers on the gamepad are much much nicer(and by much I mean MUCH) than the Wiimote's and on par with the 3DS speakers if not better from what I can tell. It even has surround like the 3DS! Of course it basically has no low end(which is a given) but the quality is impressive and better than I expected. Nintendo land looks amazing! The browser is pretty snappy and fast! The best WB i've used on a Nintendo system yet. Shame it doesn't have flash and the youtube app isn't up and running yet. I tried to download and listen to an MP3 off my kiwi6.com account on it but it treats the download like a video and says it can't play it. Zombi U is really awesome as well except for what seemed like some judder from frame rate issues in the intro cutscene(But seems to oddly not suffer any during actual gameplay) and one FMV during a shortcut back to the safe room seemed to have the same judder issue along with what looked like obvious compression.(Which if true is a bit puzzling since there is 25GB of space on the discs.)
After looking at everyone playing the Wii U it seems like a pretty good system overall. They are rather expensive, but really there's not many games for it and not for a while...
http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=500411 Well this had to be a great launch surprise. Just wow Nintendo. How did that get through? Of course it's patched by now.
That's interesting. How could they leave such an important option in and think no one would figure it out? Apparently someone else on that forum MSX found a debug on the controller it's self:
