Ok there seems to be some confusion on principles. If you decide on a CR4, it is more expensive but comes preprogrammed, there is no need to program it for Rjtag or RGH2, just different wiring and DIP settings. Any cheap nand reader/writer will do, that is just to read and write nand files, even a LPT cable and some resistors will do the job. Whether u use a shielded cpu-rst wire or the standard 25awg wire with the chip, I've not noticed any difference, this thing boots instantly practically out of the box.

The x360ace is far cheaper but requires hardware capable of programming over jtag to update the timing files (xsvf). No matter how 'good' your nand writer is, unless it can also output jtag signals, u wont be able to use x360ace. For this I would recommend a Jrprogrammer which can read/write nand over spi and also program ace360 over jtag.

Some onboard Sata chipsets will work, like Trimesh said. Worth a try. If not then just get a VIA6421 pci chipset for about $10, don't worry with x360usb pro. If u are planning on flashing lots of DVD drives or Hdds then its worth it but not for one use. I sold mine and now just use my VIA chipset whenever I need to flash a phat dvd drive.

    In summary (omitting Qsb's)

    CR4 + any flasher = ~$29 + $5
    X360ace + Jrprogrammer = ~$5 + $20

As far as I know, the X360ACE standard setting is for Corona motherboards?
So in theory you could get a X360ACE + Any Nand flasher = 6-8 dollars total (If on a Corona board)?
That would be without the option to fine tune it though.

I'll probably go the X360 ace then! What kind of programmer should I use?

I'm currently waiting on the opening tool to arrive, but I know it's a Jasper based on it's 12,1A power rating.

Or maybe not, if the total price ends up about the same, the CR4 is probably the better choice.

For the X360ACE, I would suggest the JR Programmer.
    That is entirely your choice.
If you think you are going to mod another Xbox 360 one day, you should get the JR Programmer and Ace chip.
If this will be the one and only Xbox you will ever mod, then the CR4 and random programmer, could be your best option.

Yeah, I think it will be the only one.

    Okay, so here's a break-down:
    Chip: CR4 XL
Programmer: This seems to be a JR programmer that comes bundled with some QSBs. Are they suitable for a Jasper board? It doesn't mention Jasper in the description.
QSBs: These guys claim to be selling a genuine TX QSB kit, if I don't go for the bundle I linked to before. Again, no mention of Jasper, are QSBs compatible with all board or something?!

As mentioned earlier, if you go with the CR4 then you can use almost any Nand reader/writer.
And you don't need those QSB's, you can solder your Nand reader, directly to the board, and remove it once finished.

Almost all Xbox Nand readers/writers are suitable with eachother, except for those 4 GB Corona ones.
A Jr Programmer + QSB's at 7 dollars, sounds very very fishy to me.

That is a usb spi programmer so is absolutely fine for reading/ writing the xbox nand. It has no ability to flash xvsf timing files over jtag so is no good for ace360 but fine for cr4.

    Read/write with nandpro 2e
Create xell/freeboot with jrunner or xebuild.

That was the one, I used when I CR4'd a 360. J runner will recognize it as a Jr Programmer, so it works with that program which is the best.

As I said before, if you need some really professional help, visit http://teamx360.co.uk/
A lot of these guys are really professional and heavily involved in the development of RGH.

Thanks for the update. I didn't realise jrunner recognised the matrix programmer as it is pic based. That's handy, just use jrunner throughout. Also check out Team Xecuter forums as the CR4 is their chip and there are tons of stickies and install guides to help u.

    Yea it's pretty handy!
When you write Xell to nand, Jr Runner will complain and say it couldn't write to the Nand.
Ignore that warning, the Matrix will write it, Jr Runner is just not going to confirm it.

Sweet, seems like I now know what equipment I need. Thanks guys!

As to getting it all working, I've seen a million guides online. The trick to a fast boot is to use a well-shielded power reset cable right? All the other wires can be kaynar?

Oh cool, I thought this was an optional thing some stores bundled with the chip.

You get instant boot with just normal wires? Well, if the chip comes with the wire, might as well use it.

I've found a suitable hard drive for hacking, so before I do the CR4 mod, I might as well do the HDD mod. First step will be to see if the software likes my chipset! I also found an Infinete Undiscovery faceplate for cheap on YA, I haven't played the game, but the faceplate looks cool. If I want to play the game, there's a guy on YA selling the American version of the game.

Okay! I've got the HDD and FINALLY flashed the 500GB firmware to it! Was a bit of a pain, since I needed to fiddle with my BIOS to get the drive to load. I'm sure I used the correct settings the first time, but nope.

Looks like it'll be time to get a chip for the actual console! In the meantime, is there anything I can do with the system before I install the chip? Is there any online stuff I should do before the console loses online capability?

If I were you, I would delete my "Live" account, just in case. That way you will not accidental log onto live, and get a instaban
(You can then use your live account on PC or another Xbox).
Also make sure to buy some thermal paste and change it under the heatsink.

Ah, so MS bans your Live account and not just the physical console? Good point about the thermal paste, I forgot that the heatsink would be getting removed.

No, that's just how they catch you out they'll ban both your account and console instantly.
