Cunning... Well, I'll just never take it online. I was thinking I should avoid getting it banned in case MS decide to patch out the region lock or something, but then I remembered without hacking it, I can't manually install XBLA games. Was looking forward to playing the Scott Pilgrum game since I'm a fan of the pixel artist who did the visuals. But then the licence expired and it was pulled. Makes you worry about the future of games preservation if it goes 100% digital...

So my tool finally arrived and I've been able to get the 360 opened! I'm pretty sure it's a Jasper based on the power socket and the amps rating, but it seems like there's been a few revisions of the Jasper mainboard. Any idea which one I have? Here's some photos:

Looks like a jasper, have u got a pic of the power socket? The best way to see is to hook up your nand reader and check the flash config (check motherboard command in jrunner).

    Yep, here it is:

The PSU seems to be an older type though, it doesn't have the two notches. Weird. Would it be worthwhile trying to track down a newer PSU? Less heat or something maybe?

It is a Jasper, hopefully it's the 16mb nand version!

Oh? What can you do with the 16mb version that you can't with the others?

Almost every Xbox is 16MB nand :
The reason why we hope it is that one, is because it will take less time to read and write.
The others are 256 and 512 MB, and with the "slow" reader you bought, it will take some time to get done.

    Ah, I see.

Also, I haven't actually bought any of the equipment yet. I think I'll just get a bundle from Modchip Central rather than risk ordering some stuff from Alibaba that turns out to be on backorder and takes 2 months to arrive or something. At least, if I can get their payment system sorted out.

That's a jasper power port. U can use any older psu and the jasper will just draw what it needs from the supply. Also checking the serial number on the dash board and any internal memory would confirm this. Serials ending in 9xxxx are 2009. Anything late 2008 onwards is a jasper. U only need to read first 64mb of nand on big block (256mb and 512mb) Jaspers to compare and create xell as these have all the necessary nand info.

If you haven't ordered anything yet. I can with confidence now say that the X360ACE works perfect.
I got myself a cheap ACE (2.80$), and programmed it with a Jr-Programmer.
It works splendid, boots in about 5-10 seconds.
    I can definetly recommend it!

Ah, I just got the issues I was having with Modchip Central sorted out and placed an order before you posted this! Oh well, maybe the R4XL can shave a few seconds off the time you're getting? I ordered the optional heavy shielded reset cable to try and get the fastest boot I can. Also ordered the x clamp remover, I'd like to avoid scratching up the main board or bending the clamps out of shape!

The CR4 will work good as well,
    It's just insanely overpriced.
What nand reader/writer did you get?

A JRP V2 it seems. A bit more expensive than I would like; but it does mean everything will be arriving at the same time. The same can't be said of the XBLA torrent I'm downloading, it's been going for weeks! Well, at least the Simpsons arcade is completed, that's one "good game that was removed due to bone-headed licensing issues" down.

If it was too expensive, why didn't you buy the Matrix nand programmer?
    Or the Jr v2, and a Ace360?
Oh never mind, you have purchased it, and it will work fine :)

Well, it seemed like the R4XL was going to give me the very best chance at insta-booting from what I'd read. The Ace might have also, but it seemed like the very best chance was with the R4XL. And in the end, getting all the equipment as one package was a bit more convenient, despite only having a more expensive programmer as the only choice.

Anyway, it's all ordered, the 360 is all disassembled, cleaned and ready for the equipment to arrive! Also got an old 360 hard drive to put the 500GB into. In addition to "HDD" being printed on the case (instead of specifying what capacity, none of which say "500GB) it also has a chrome trim that I just now realized had been removed on the later versions. Shiny!

Okay, the kit has arrived! Bit of confusion though, I ordered the optional QSB kit, but what I've been sent looks totally different from what's shown in the guide.

I also got just one board, "kit" my ass! I think the QSB I have is a newer, more condensed version? There's a guy over here who seems to have the same question. So this is where I should be installing it then?

Since I don't have the other QSBs, it looks like I'll need to be wiring it in directly. So THIS is the guide I should be following then?

You do miss a couple of QSB's, but you can read the nand without them.
Cut the QSB-plugs, and install the wires according to color:

So, plug in the cables to the programmer, chop the plug off the end of the 7 wire cable and solder them to the marked points according to color basically? Easy enough!

As to the QSB I do have, it seems like it's actually just a newer version of the "CLAMP" (named for the manga group I wonder? :p) QSB, so it gets installed to the same location as the older one did? I can't see anywhere else it would fit :p This would mean I don't need to do the diodes step in the above wire-free install guide, correct? And from there, I just need to solder in the R4XL itself, following the locations shown in the wire-free install guide?

That's the jtag qsb v3, it does the same thing as jtag wiring on topside but it has had the ROL option removed so u are left with just the AUD clamp configuration (better). Just install as u would a V2 qsb. Good luck.

Gotcha! I assume the pad on the end of the new QSB still gets wired up to the same point that the pad on the end of the old QSB did?

I checked with the store I got the kit from and it is indeed suppose to have one QSB. I think they need to re-check their definition of "kit".

Out of curiosity, if the 7 wires on the programmer are all you need to install to program the NAND, what on Earth are the remaining wires on the programmer for?

I know what u mean, some shops are shameless for their product descriptions. Not sure what u mean by other wires. The Jrp has several functions. The seven wires are for spi programming of the nand which are SCLK, MOSI, MISO, SS, etc. then u have jtag for programming old coolrunners (Rev A - C) these are TMS, TDI, TDO etc. then u have a Jrp - CR4/ Rjtag bridge cable which allows for Rater/ post monitoring of the xbox boot sequence ( very nice). This is great for troubleshooting boot problems or fine tuning your installation.
