the LG 816x used for dumping GC and Wii discs does utilize a modified firmware however. Cheap? how cheap? (read-only drive I assume) About the exploit, I have nothing for piracy, but it's interesting to see if they can manage to breach the PS3 in that manner effectively. Basement hackers never seize to amaze me with their ingenuity
I didn't modify my 8163 :\ Well: Cheap as in $150AUD. Or $132 if I wanted one as I get cost-price + GST. And yep. Read only.

thats because the guy on e-bay was selling them pre-modified I think a BD-drive would be interesting on a PC but nothing but movies uses it so far, so it's not a necessity just yet.
It was brand new out of a box from our supplier. I don't have use for a BD drive yet. Media centre will only fit one drive and I'd prefer a DVD-Burner.

Thanks....I think. Just because it's a better alternative doesn't mean I myself will do so. Why are exploits.etc created? Why do crackers/hackers find such exploits? Where to the majority of pirate games come from? It was a comment, not a 'Hey guise, I'ma pirate yarrrrgggghhhh' Regardless, I'm not owning a PS3 until they are affordable. Forget that I ever posted it.
Finding and creating an exploit is the same thing. Exploit means to take advantage of. What they are taking advantage of is bugs. Bugs exist because of people making mistakes. They do it either for the challenge or because it gives them the ability to do something they want ( whether thats running copied games or their own code ). My theory on xbox 360 games is that microsoft leak them early with code that identifies them as pirate so that they can ban people from live that run it. Other than that, they can come from anywhere. Duplicators, press, distributors, shops etc. Releases made after it goes on sale could come from anyone that bought it. It's less likely to come from someone that worked on the game.
Well, I just saw that I'm still at 1.79!! XD I might install something when there's something a bit more clear around.
