Why bother going? There are plenty of websites to cater to your needs. One of my old bosses used to surf mail order bride websites when he got bored at work.

Just make sure you don't end up with a mail order husband.

So what are your favorite hunting grounds?

I myself prefer women working. They can't leave (lol) and they are working, so
it's the same as approaching them on the street cold (nanpa suspicions)

i was single in Japan for a total of 3 months in the nearly 9 years i've been here.

i turned up engaged to be married but the toll of a long term relationship with a childhood sweetheart took broke us, and (prior to meeting my now wife) i had a brief window of opportunity and um... i am not sure how it is now but it was pretty odd back then.

it was the back end of 2000, and casually "dating" japanese women was friggin weird. My Japanese teacher had warned me that "you are just a label, you are prada, you are the gucci bag - go to Roppongi and have a load of fun but DO NOT allow yourself to fall for one of these women because you aren't anything but an accessory". Gulp. She warned that the same few questions would come up instantly upon meeting someone looking for a free ticket : "where do you work?" "where do you live?" "what are your hobbies?" and without fail , time and time again, same three questions after which the reaction would dictate where the evening was going.

As other foreigners soon clicked, it's pretty easy to say whatever if you are looking for a night or two of fun, and it was surprisingly easy for the chatting-up inept such as myself to do quite "well". However , i would never ever have considered any of the people in that time period as anything else than fun - a few bars where the other office/pro japanese women with western/uni level education with huge degrees of independence was much more what i was interested in - though obviously some way out of my depth! haha.

Still all worked out well, happy where i am, but dating in Japan casually was fun but something i don't think i was particularly cut out for and was happy to get back into something a bit more long term and stable.

to add, i'm a pretty ugly fellow - no doubts - so i'm sure some of you stunners would have lots of fun! ;)

Can't work a woman the same way you can a man! Women's backs aren't as strong and thus not as good at digging ditches.

Yes but Roppongi has a sort of label to it, I've never really visited the place at all, okay tell a lie I had to go to the Swedish embassay one day (no I'm not Swedish, although I had to go there for work purposes). I think someone described the main place being the arse end of Tokyo.

I don't think Japan is any different to any other country in the world, although when it comes to dating, it's possible to have lots of fun anywhere in the world, the two easiest places for me though were Chicago and Tokyo.

As for dating, I've had lots of short long term relationships (if there can be such a thing...) but most of my gfs have been Japanese mainly as the interesting ones, who were independent, could think and could do more things then go shopping and go out clubbing were great to be with, although Japanese woman are a lot more clingy and prone to jealously more then others.

well, from my own semi-sheltered experience, i'd somewhat disagree. As i say, i take my own words with the huge mountain of salt as i've pretty much serial dated from the age of 15 until now (that 3 month gap in Tokyo is the only time i've not been in a relationship since, and i'm now 34 :/)

but yes, in the UK it was always hard to initiate the first steps i felt. I am always wary of just jumping into something so i usually want to get to know people first. In the UK, from what i could observe from friends, this seemed like it was pretty difficult to do. In Tokyo it seems to work so much easier - the number of dinner dates and lunch trips with females was very very frequent, so i felt i could get to know someone in a 1-on-1 situation without any of the stigma that such meetings seemed to carry in the UK.

Of course, again, i'm hardly an expert given my limited casual dating experience (which i never really had in the UK given the three long terms i was in all sort of overlapped! :shifty)

Again, on the Japanese woman front, my wife is heavily westernised and is half portuguese so she seems more european to me than Japanese (though she's a games freak so glad that part of Japan stuck with her :D) but hasn't been clingy at all - then again, since my first ever girfriend was insanely clingy and i hated it and i've actively saught out very independent women since, i guess that might have something to do with it. :D

That's actually a complement. I always say, "the bowels of Japan...".
