Loadup dreamshell with the SD Card that has the proper files and it should lightup, also make sure the led is not backwards.

 

will try tonight. LED is not backwards for sure, haven't loaded anything in terms of sd card, didn't know if it just lit up from power to the system. i'll put it together tonight and let you know. thanks bud

 

Installed this yesterday and it seems to work - I can browse files on the SD card in Dreamshell and can load some games. The LED doesn't light up for some reason though. I am a bit disappointed that so few titles work properly with it. That's not Helder's fault though.

 

If you soldered the led backwards,it´s probably burn by now.
Resolder a new one in the correct position.
The problem is that not all games have the correct files to run under sd like 1st_read.bin and ip.bin
And guys have to adapt files for it to run,and since persons make the hd mod apparently they stopped to try convert games to SD.

The LED is in the correct position - the longer lead was soldered to the pad marked positive on the board.

I don't know that more development efforts for the SD loader would be very fruitful - seems like its just too slow since the few games that do run from SD still have issues with lag and music.

 

Bought one yesterday. Hope it ships fast to Portugal

How easy are these to install?

 

Depends on your soldering skills and you need a fine tip soldering iron. If you've never soldered before I wouldn't make this your first project. I've had some say they can solder and had issues with the install and when I saw the board it didn't look like he did or used a shitty soldering iron with large tip.

I won't replace messed up boards due to lack of skill or equipment. All you need is soldering iron and solder and to make the install easier use flux and that should be it.

 

Excuse my ignorance, but what exactly does this mod do? Is it like an ODE for the dreamcast?

 

It allows you to rip your games, play most backups with varying speeds since it's a serial port. You can do homebrew and run emulators and even flash a new bios. You will need a working GDRom though since you need Dreamshell boot cd or you can can flash Dreamshell to an alternate Bios.

I do have plenty of these but the bios chip I have 1 for the VA1 Dreamcast but it's unflashed which you can do once you install the SD card reader.
