From the pics, it looks like its mostly a 1 for 1 replacement of the GD-ROM board with new USB board. Will the laser assembly still fit where it did before while still being able to close up the console?

I think you can still install the black part with the laser/motor , but why?
my "problem" is that now that there is no drive to make spin noises there is no cover for the fan sound... I will do a modification, maybe install a 40x40 fan and that ne555 timer to emulate a rpm signal

airflow. That is reason LordFenixNC is wanting to make a piece to replace that. Just dont think it would be needed on the USB version if you can just stick the black plastic laser assembly back in. Probably wouldnt do anything for the noise though, but it might help?

Just thought about it... With the USB one - if the back laser assembly does fit it is too bad that MNENO couldn't make a pass through for the laser to plug back in with a switch to enable and disable the EMU or the GD rom and have the best of both worlds.

That would be pretty awesome if that is his new board revision! Probably not though.

it would be more complicated to have the laser working as well... once he adds CDI support I don't see a reason to have a drive IMHO
plus there won't be a new board revision, only more features

I was just thinking that, going to add mine back in & see how it fairs.

some pics of it installed, now to see if I can smell the electrical smell after a while.

Thanks for the menu! Its great! I may have found a bug though with some NG Dev team cdis:

    folder 2 is Fast Striker
    folder 3 is Gunlord
    folder 5 is Neo XYZ

They still load but for some reason just show blank in the menu

Cool that it fit. I guess know we will find out if the disc spinning helps cool it. :)

The reason there blank I'm guess is because the game title is blank.

also the disc doesn't spin as the laser assembly gets no power, but it doesn't work well for me anyways I flung the underside of the GDROM holder out so I'm going back to the internal fan.

that sucks it didnt help. I know the disc wasnt going to spin. Some people were thinking that was helping keep it cool. I just figured it if worked for you without the drive spinning, that would either prove or disprove that theory.

I was thinking the generic game/program was the message that came up if the title was blank. But its not showing anything, even the folder number.

I'm sure that will be fine with the list feature as it will just read the list.ini file and boot to menu faster (It wouldn't surprise me if madsheep is already working on a way to inject the list.ini into the menu using his awesome SD program)

With regards the heat issue, it seems like a combination of a less efficient PSU and air flow. DK did voltage checks with a GDROM installed then the GDEMU:
    PSU voltages:
    • GD-ROM drive (no disc): 3.296V / 5.030V / 13.28V
    • GDEMU: 3.305V / 5.042V / 14.26V

As somebody did here you can either make a fence to direct airflow - or block the holes at the back and make new ones near the PSU for a direct intake, in the end I fitted a 12V RF relay switch and mounted at the back of the dreamcast -the case acted as a fence lol (was originally going to use a 5V RF switch until I saw the voltages) also took power from the PSU for the built in scanline generator rather than using V-Sync. The PSU does get hotter but not really noticeable - no electrical smell and definitely a lot cooler than the Saturn PSU.

That basically what I just got. (Was adding a second USB for external drives that require more than 5v)

That was me that made the shitty looking fence. :)

Thanks for the reply on the menu. I just thought it looked odd. I will wait on the list.ini feature. Sounds like it will fix it.

im currently designing a few dif ways to do this... wont start forming till next month... sadly.. but that will give me time to test with a more pliable plastic that can be formed without a vac

The list feature is useable now - but you have to unpack the menu CDI - add the list.ini to the root then rebuild the CDI.

The list feature is awesome for the larger SD cards - my 32GB one loads a lot faster :)

So what do you think the next system EMU should be to replace the CD DRIVE? I know they are working on a PSX one. I also know that Saturn and PC engine or PC FX I forgot which is in the works.

What would you want to see next?
Would you love to see a EMU for every cd based system?

Saturn, PC engine, PC FX, Turbo CD, Sega CD, PSX, other?

I personally want Saturn next if they ever make one. Almost 1000 games from all 3 regions and was a killer system for what it was back in the day.

    How about you?

Definitely Saturn - there's at least 2 projects in development already for that :) (I'm sure there's over 1400 Saturn games but could be mistaken)
Would also like to see a PCE and a FM Towns Marty emu at some point :)
