Cheers, it's getting there! The top box was from a genuine ID cabinet. The dimensions of the marquee holder on Sega Touring is different, therefore it was a case of marking off the correct nut/bolt positions and drilling them out. 8mm drill bit, for those who are interested or perhaps considering doing something similar. I then inserted a standard 240vac tube light (13w max) from B&Q. You need to earth this to the frame and then to the main supply input. Worked out pretty well I think. Total cost £2.00 for nuts, bolts and washers plus £15.00 for the lighting kit. £17.00 ain't bad! Now to tackle the missing subwoofer I just discovered should be under the seat! Removed by previous owner?
I actually thought I'd nip down to a specialist car audio place this weekend, however not had the time yet. I need an under seat sub that will accept an RCA input, either that or I might remove the rear fan (it's useless anyway, put in a different means of circulating cool air) and have the sub mounted at rear of the seating in the chassis section. The floor mat is harder to replace than I thought. Very thin rubber padding and everything I've had a look at is too thick. This is the best I have seen so far, but I am not needing 10m of the stuff @ £38.00 - http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&item=130303900664 Cheers! It's taken a bit longer than I had hoped, but being patient is paying off as various genuine parts are floating to the surface on eBay and elsewhere. I just located 10 original ID cards.
Why wait mate, I don't have the space even now lol. I've re-built this unit in the conservatory (the only space I have at the moment) and once complete I'll have to take it completely to bits and move it.
There was a topic on Jamma+ about rubber matting, I'm sure. Someone found a good source of a matting that matched the original on his cab and I think even had spare bits he'd sell.
Hey parris! Always had fun stalking after your works on arcade cabs. Especially sit down racing stuff, like that ridge racer cab you had. This one however, I find personally stands out the most. Looking back in this thread and seeing that ugly Touring Car cab... you can barely make it out now. Even showed the recent pictures to a friend and he was asking me "What progress?" I was talking about. He didnt realize it was that ugly Touring Car cab haha. Pity that the initial d art is always so abnormal. I find the style the characters are drawn remind me of Pedophiles. Maybe it's just me though!
Hey MM, I am glad you like the work thus far and I am pleased to hear that your mate never even realised it hadn't started life as an Initial D unit - I'd like to think I could get it looking absolutely perfect, but I seriously doubt I can obtain everything and wished I had started with an ID cab at the very least! "I find the style the characters are drawn remind me of Pedophiles"... LOL! O k a y ? Is it the beads of sweat on their brows and bad acne that makes you say that? I actually like the style of the artwork, but prefer the sort of work you find in American comic books. The game on the Naomi that really seems to get the comic style down pat is the "Lupin" title. I've had my eye on that one for some time now. Welcome to AG btw! Clearly you have lurked and not been a poster until now!
Hey mate. I might post a query / request. There was a company offering a re-matting surface with 3rd party rubber. I asked Andy about them and although he offers a link to them through his site, he did think I could manage it myself for a lot less if I found a similar grade.
Hahah, Yes that, and that creepy older guy. Honestly I havent played the game too much, (Boring without a good steering wheel.) Its Initial D: Special Stage and later down the row, you race a Creepy older looking japanese business guy. Possibly middle aged. He is also with a little obese child, might be his Boy Toy. Since I dont understand what they said, I interpreted their tone of voice and face expressions as something like "Hey there, little boy! You like cars? We got cars, hehe, yeah." I agree, for initial d, a more western approach might would have done better. Ironicly, for me it feels like an approach to a, well, "more westernized" anime already. If that makes any sense. I know the actual comic is pretty old, but compared to other stuff at the time, it feels out of place. However there's plenty who love it, so I suppose its all about his own taste, or state of twisted mind, lol. Thanks for the welcome by the way
I've been working on the pedals and foot area. Just as a reminder, here is how it looked until I started work. And although I haven't posted up images of the footpedals, the rust was pretty bad on them under the silver cover. It took a lot of work to get to this stage: There's a streak of silver paint on one of the legs - only just spotted it tonight, so it'll be sanded lightly and a touch up spray applied. What looks like rust on the pedals (at the rear) are actually rubber stoppers which need cleaned - ignore them! And I even ensured that the rear of the unit was in better order. I need to wire in the VR, plus spray the back plate. The foot mat is currently a piece of linoleum that was lying around, but I have found a supplier of the precise rubber matting I need - albeit 10 meters of it, so if anyone is needing theirs replaced let me know. It's costing £38 a roll plus P&P, so I can do a good deal on the 53cm x 35cm required! So, the cabinet is currently at this stage: The whole seat & bracket has been removed in order that I can take off the plastics. I've located the correct parts and waiting their arrival. Getting there!
 I am enjoying it and it has been a labor of love. Finding the missing parts and locating genuine parts has been a real trawl. Items coming from as far as Japan, Italy and America. However I must suggest you join a couple of real arcade websites (rather than dev ones) as some of the restorations are incredible. In effect all I have done is spruce it up and give the unit a face lift. Some guys actually rebuild from virtually nothing and do amazing work. However, thanks! Keep looking as I have new parts arriving in the next couple of weeks. I've tracked down someone willing to sell me the proper seat (albeit in really poor condition and I need to do a bit of work on those), plus the full card reading kit including a newly sandblasted bracket. I've also located replacement ribbed rubber for the footwell, plus I'm getting skaters grip tape for the pedals (that was the idea of a member on another forum). So.... getting there slowly, but surely. The only item that is not genuine now is the dashboard and lack of force feedback. The force feedback is my only really concern tbh as I prefer the wheel and dash.
Holy crap! I haven't viewed the thread in a while but the cab looks stunning! The difference is night and day! You do very good work!
Google away and have a gander as I am sure you'll find loads, but in the mean time you should check out VAPS (Video Arcade Preservation Society) http://www.arcade-museum.com/vaps/ Jamma+ http://www.jammaplus.co.uk/forum/default.asp Otaku Arcade (which is where I generally post these days) http://www.arcadeotaku.com/forum/index.php For USA members, I also stumbled upon this a while ago and thought it might be of interest: http://www.superauctions.com/pages/home.htm Seriously, keep googling - there's tonnes out there!
