Unfortunately incompetent morons are probably handling your data multiple times a day anyway. Even the US government gets hacked. According to the Playstation Blog:
So the passwords where hashed, so it wasn't stored in plain text. http://blog.us.playstation.com/2011/05/02/playstation-network-security-update/ On Tuesday, April 26 we shared that some information that was compromised in connection with an illegal and unauthorized intrusion into our network. Once again, we’d like to apologize to the many users who were inconvenienced and worried abut this situation. We want to state this again given the increase in speculation about credit card information being used fraudulently. One report indicated that a group tried to sell millions of credit card numbers back to Sony. To my knowledge there is no truth to this report of a list, or that Sony was offered an opportunity to purchase the list. One other point to clarify is from this weekend’s press conference. While the passwords that were stored were not “encrypted,†they were transformed using a cryptographic hash function. There is a difference between these two types of security measures which is why we said the passwords had not been encrypted. But I want to be very clear that the passwords were not stored in our database in cleartext form. For a description of the difference between encryption and hashing, follow this link. To reiterate a few other security measures for your information: Sony will not contact you in any way, including by email, asking for your credit card number, social security number or other personally identifiable information. If you are asked for this information, you can be confident Sony is not the entity asking. When the PlayStation Network and Qriocity services are fully restored, we strongly recommend that you log on and change your password. Additionally, if you use your PlayStation Network or Qriocity user name or password for other unrelated services or accounts, we strongly recommend that you change them, as well. To protect against possible identity theft or other financial loss, we encourage you to remain vigilant, to review your account statements and to monitor your credit reports. We continue to work with law enforcement and forensic experts to identify the criminals behind the attack. Once again, we apologize for causing users concern over this matter. Our objective is to increase security so our customers can safely and confidently play games and use our network and media services. We will continue to provide updates as we have them.
Sony would've done well to just state everything up front as hashing passwords is a common security practice and is a good idea. By stating that they were not encrypted was accurate but it lead everyone to assume that by being "not encrypted" that meant "not protected at all". People are going to spread the initial details around and will remember those best. Secondary releases are going to get buried. Though of amusement: during last week's South Park airing was a commercial advertising the PS3 and its wonderful multiplayer capabilities. Smooth Sony, really smooth.
So... How about them SOE Account. I hope nobody has an account from 2007 with a credit card, your number was possibly leaked. *note* SOE as in everquest people (not PSN/Playstation division).
I wish I wasn't so in to the whole Playstation Network. I cant just call it quits, but you had better believe that my credit card will be removed and they will be getting a ton less money from me. This whole thing is just out of control
"Sony Online Entertainment reveals that the personal information of 24.6 million SOE accounts and more than 12,700 credit card numbers may have been compromised...." REALLY??? That's major.
I'm not giving up PSN at all but you can bet your ass i'm going pre-paid cards from now on. There is no reason for me not to. Hell probably I will do the same for any future system with exception to my 3DS/DSi since they are imports and import shops charge massive markups on point cards (and nintendo so far with Dsi accepts foreign cards).
I'm not too concerned since I've been on PSN with a CFW PS3 the entire time I've been using it (although I've only played games legitimately purchased online). I was going to set up some billing information with a credit card, but that was the same day that Sony blocked the old 3.15-era DNS trick. By the time 3.60 spoofer came out, I had lost interest. I hate to say it, but I'm actually safe because Sony screwed me over. Thanks Sony!
Never used credit cards online, except when i had a paypal account. I only use pre-paid cards on PSN and for online auctions / stores i always use bank deposit or bank payment slips.
as last news it seems the whole mess might be an inside job from some of the online staff fired just 2 weeks before... sony kicked out more than 200 people working one ONLINE sections... people that had access and probably ways to dehash the passwords. instead of annoying jailbreakers, chockolo and geohot they should have been checking around their own company
I received my email by Saturday but I canceled my current credit card nevertheless. That said, I am credit-card-less for the next 15 days thanks to Sony. Next time I'd like a kiss before I get fucked by Sony.
Here's an article about it: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-13256817 I feel sorry for Everquest users.
It's supposed to be coming back over the course of the week. I still can't log in though. And to cap it all off the Blu-Ray drive in my Phat finally decided to die, just as the kids were watching Jack Sparrow avoiding some cannibals, which really didn't go down well. :dammit:
bummer. Never used the BD-drive to play a single BD movie to be honest.. I don't even have an HD TV set yet
