I'm on Mac OS, I bit the bullet and bought a new 2tb HDD, installed windows in a virtual machine and used that format tool you linked to, managed to get it to work but I now have problems running random games, I've tried PAL GDI versions of 18 Wheeler and Super Magnetic Neo and they restart to system bios yet other PAL GDI's work, I dunno whats going on haha!

Also tried another USB stick or HDD?
And which version do you have of the USB GDROM?
If you have one of the first you have to load the special fix that could be found in the readme!

I've tried the original Maxtor that used to work and a two different Seagates, using 1st gen USB GDROM, also used the special fix

Sorry to hear, I can't help you, this all I know and things I tried to get things running.
    CDI's are running?
Maybe you could send MNEMO a new mail with more details with what you have tried and which version you are running.

Where are you guys finding these new updates? When I go to the main site, the most recent update is 2016/12/04, unless that's the very firmware we are talking about.

I haven't taken the plung to that firmware yet lol v1 board here, but when doing updates in the past I usually need a file from mnemo so GDI's work again :/ just a small bin file it's download link is the readme of the update file.

I am having the same issue. I have a board purchased in January 2017, and it has the 04 Dec 2016 update. When I try to load a .gdi file, the dreamcast simply goes into a reboot loop. I have the "special update" .bin file on the usb drive as described, no affect. Is there any way to roll back the update or download an earlier firmware version?

If you recently bought it is a version 5.
That should be able to work just fine!
Just be sure to format your disk correctly.
For all things I have done to resolve it read my earlier POST.

I am pretty sure it will work if your USB disk is correctly formatted with 64k blocks

-Maybe it is a idea to create a new starting post with all things you can do and sticky it?

I went back and read your previous posts. I downloaded and installed the 8 Dec 2016 update, and used mnemo's recommended fat 32 tool. I reformatted to the 64k sector standard. Everything seems to be working now, no special update file needed. Thank you!

I haven't had any problems with the USB gdrom and my mac, formatting has worked great. Then again I'm on Yosemite where the disk utility hasn't been axed. The number one thing that ode's have when it comes to the dreamcast is no missburn and no having to keep 3 different burning softwares on your computer because not all cdis are the same.

I feel compatibility > menu. But I'm used to Kirkzz's flashcarts. So maybe that's why I don't care about a text based menu.

I prefer compatibility/stability over pretty graphic menus any day of the week, which is far more important.

    Second that!
I don't mind the menu at all.
    It's fast and it works.

Hello everyone! I recently discovered the new usbgdrom firmware and wanted to update my device. I have an older one, with the external usb. It has the firmware it originally came with and currently only boots gdi files. I was browsing this topic but it got a little overwhelming. I just want to know the steps needed to update the firmware on my device so I can play both gdi and cdi files. Thanks!

Download the firmware from mnemos site, extract the .bin file and stick it on the root of your USB pen/HDD turn on your Dreamcast with the USB device connected and select the firmware file it will update the device and reboot.

Now open the read me file that came with the firmware and download the file linked in there, so GDI files work after the update. ( link is in the read me and you just stick the file on the root of the USB device and that's it, you don't have to select it )
